The old solution used to be, if the gal wants to get married and the guy doesn't, the girl's two muscular stalwart brothers go and ...explain the matter to him.

Not that I'm recommending that now...

Back in the pre-DNA and pre-”Right to Choose” days, if a girl became pregnant out of wedlock and had to engage a lawyer, very often the guy would bring a half dozen buddies to court, each swearing he’d had relations with her, so no paternity could be established.

Kinda related; kinda not.

In the pre-DNA days, a male relative caught his wife cheating. Proceedings for divorce were immediate.

His politically influential father hooked him with a lawyer to gain custody of their young son. The woman simply claimed the child wasn't his.

There being no way to prove one way or the other, the male's family had to accept. There was no support asked for or offered.

To this day, the older crowd pretends the boy is not part of our bloodline. Simply looking at him is enough to refute this. He is the spitting image of his "non-father."

Of course, if anyone in the family was interested, it’d probably be easy enough now to get that DNA test. You can bet if I were either the father/non-father or the child, I’d want that test done. Sad how immature adults can make life so painful for a child.

Historically, that’s why in the Jewish tradition, children take the religion of the mother who birthed them, the one they know for sure is the child’s parent.

I'd want to know, too. But the father/non-father is now in his late 70's; He's lived the lie so long, it would probably be destructive to challenge things now. The "boy" is my age... 50 plus.

I haven't seen him in years, although I used to see him periodically... not as a member of the family, but just because we ran in similar circles. I recall that he became somewhat successful, which is WAY more than I can say about the son who was born of a second marriage.

Harsh to say, but maybe he was better off the way things turned out.

Excuse me? Men consistently poll as more “pro-life” than women.

I didn't say they were less pro-life than women but that a lot of men, re: lib men, are pro-abortion so they can skate out of an 18-year financial commitment.

By the way. I’m very glad you are still here for us to argue with. Hope you are feeling well these days. I enjoy when you are the grain of sand in our oyster, irritating us to think about things. Please know its great to see you here and in full form! When I disagree with you, it’s 99% the kind of arguing that gets done on a front porch, solving the worlds problems.
Good clean fun.

Good to know the child’s life had a happy ending (ok, not ending-ending). Sometimes these things DO take decades to work themselves out.

To some extent.

The girl is stuck with a child for a husband, who will likely have difficulty supporting his family for his entire life.

Yes, but he’s also stuck with a child isn’t he.

I doubt these two are headed to the alter though.

You’ll have two very young kids with a lot more responsibility than they should have. One just hopes they both can rise to the occasion.

Amen to that, and thank you. I do like a friendly pitcher-of-cold-beer and a couple-of-glasses type of argument.

Oh, by the way, a parishioner brought me a nice cold beer when I got out of the ICU and was in a regular room. I think the hospital people are still talking about it :o)

I am a teenage boy who apparently has impregnated a teenage girl. She says she's in love with me still, but also she will not get an abortion and insists that I pay support. I think this is all mood swings. How do I support her morally but not monetarily?

Man up, son.

I was once a teenage boy of 19, and I impregnated a teenage girl of 17.

We married over 47 years ago, and remain so. Our daughter will be 47 this year.

The odds were against us, according to the loudest voices of the time.

Won’t we be something, with a 50th anniversary before the age of 70?

Rush said it best, go find a woman you hate and buy her a house. Marriage today, but my son kept the house after all three of his divorces... Its been 10 years since his last marriage, I told him if he gets married again, don't invite me I cannot afford to keep buying wedding

presents. First marriage lasted 17 years, second one rebound marriage lasted 6 months. Her 4th marriage, I warned him. She had 3 kids all by different fathers, one was not a marriage, it was a live in boyfriend... Any one that gets married today is a tad nuts in my humble opinion. Having a live in is worse than a marriage...It seems if the woman has kids, there is a greater chance of the live in killing the child...women are nuts also....

I put most of the blame on the girl, she spread her legs cause the culture today said its fine, the feminists think abortion is the cure all for the girls situation...In my day, back in the 50’s girls were much smarter and of all the gals I knew in high school, only one got pregnant and gave the baby up for adoption. Fathers told their sons about jail bait and most listened...and knew what a condom was for...We had this thing called ....a shot gun wedding...it never sounded too romantic....There was one gal that said she was pregnant and after they married she told the fellow she lied, not pregnant....

Dear Mrs. Don-o,

I find the approach here to be in serious error.

The young man should not have any responsibility toward the child. In fact, it should be forbidden by law to seek support from him or any others.

If the mother cannot support the child, she should abandon the child in favor of those who can support the child. She should receive no assistance from the father, or from the government.

If the child is to be supported by the government, let that occur with an adoptive couple or within the context of an orphanage.

For those with a vengeful streak who cannot abide that the young man might totally escape responsibility for his actions, there is stoning.
