This country fines you for being unemployed

Losing your job comes with an extra sting if you live in Belarus.

Citizens of the eastern European country are now being forced to pay penalties if they find themselves out of work for too long.

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko signed a decree this month that sets fines for unemployed people, and puts them at risk of temporary detention.

Lukashenko has ruled the country of nine million since 1994, and is considered by many to be Europe's last dictator.

Under the new law, people who haven't worked for at least six months -- and therefore haven't paid taxes - must pay the government at least $252.

Those who don't pay could be detained, and forced to undertake community service. The move is reminiscent of Soviet-era tactics that criminalized people who didn't contribute to the state.

The decree aims to "stimulate able-bodied citizens to engage in labor activity and fulfill their constitutional obligation to participate in financing state expenditures."

A Romanian guide told me that in the Ceaușescu years if the police found you idle or drunk in the day and you couldn't produce a current work ID they would beat you. The second time they beat and jail you then subsequently increase the punishment till you came to your senses or died. When Michelle O said in 2008 "Barak is gonna make you work" I assumed this is what she meant. Selective enforcement is of course fundamental in dictatorship.

Using Romney’s famous percentage number in the 2012 election, we’d have at least 47% of the population of the U.S. in prison.

However, in the U.S., we’d be much better off if we’d put the politicians in prison who encourage people to not work.

I know...
Let’s let third world countries flood our markets with cheap products putting Americans out of work. Then let’s fine Americans for being out of work. Then we can beat them, jail them, until they come to their senses or die.
And since there are no jobs, they will die.
And while we are at it. let’s flood America with immigrants immune to such punishments, and they will soon be the majority.

Sadly, I get the impression that most Republicans and freepers would indeed beat the shiite out of the American for being unemployed.

The GOPe and the democrats would make sure he's on food stamps and gets an obamaphone and pat themselves on the back for helping him.

Good thinking Mr. Traveler...

The greedy corporations have and are shipping off tens of hundreds of thousands of American jobs to low wage peasants in Communist China and countries all over the entire planet. While at the same time, the fat corps and corrupt gov aided/abetted and supported flooding the U.S. with tens of millions of low wage illegal aliens which big biz hires.

So lets label what’s left of the declining American middle class deadbeats, and then fine and jail them for not getting jobs.

Government employees would love to see that policy here. They’ve shut down most productive private sector work with their regulations and taxes, and they love to beat dead producers.

Belarus
Wikipedia
Lukashenko continued a number of Soviet-era policies, such as state ownership of large sections of the economy. Elections under Alexander Lukashenko have been widely criticized as being unfair, and according to many countries and organizations, political opposition has been violently suppressed.[16][17][18] In 2000, Belarus and Russia signed a treaty for greater cooperation, with some hints of forming a Union State.
