Real life Big Buck Hunter "Hero" Rebecca Francis thought she had snagged yet another trophy animal when she shot and killed a giraffe in Africa in 2010.
The 41-year-old mother of eight, who's hunted and killed everything from bears, moose and bighorn rams to zebras, lynx and antelopes, downed the beast with a bow and took a picture laying next to its carcass.
That, it seemed, was that. But she never considered what Ricky would think.
Five years later, the comedian Ricky Gervais found the picture and tweeted it to his followers, asking, "What must've happened to you in your life to make you want to kill a beautiful animal & then lie next to it smiling?"

REBECCA FRANCIS responds to giraffe photo controversy: Rebecca states, “When I was in Africa five years ago I was of the mindset that I would never shoot a giraffe. I was approached toward the end of my hunt with a unique circumstance. They showed me this beautiful old bull giraffe that was wandering all alone. He had been kicked out of the herd by a younger and stronger bull. He was past his breeding years and very close to death. They asked me if I would preserve this giraffe by providing all the locals with food and other means of survival. He was inevitably going to die soon and he could either be wasted or utilized by the local people. I chose to honor his life by providing others with his uses and I do not regret it for one second. Once he was down there were people waiting to take his meat. They also took his tail to make jewelry, his bones to make other things, and did not waste a single part of him. I am grateful to be a part of something so good”

Rebecca is a good Lady and a hell of a hunter. Had the pleasure of hunting with her at a benefit hunt hunt we were doing for the Brooks Army Medical Center, all the hunters were wounded and recovering Vets. If anybody doubts her hunting skills they need to see the video of her record class Big Horn, she took with a bow. Not many can ever say they’ve done that.
You get to eat some as camp meat, you can’t take meat home . But the meat is given to local tribes who can reduce an elephant carcass in hours. You get the skin etc as trophies and the memories of a hunt in some pretty wild and dangerous country.
I smile too and so does my wife we’re just putting food on the table. You’ll see more smile’s if our Bison hunt this fall is successful, she’s using an old 45-70 and I’m using a long bow. You couldn’t have knocked the smiles off our faces after we completed our first Helo hunt for hog’s last year, we got 63 hog’s in just under 6 hours. I want to do that one again!
You can feed allot of people with one Giraffe. The game ranches are a major source of food and income for the local tribes. Maybe the OP should go to Africa and sell his opinion to the locals, Hyena’s and Vultures have to eat too.

Rebecca Francis actually “honored” that poor old giraffe by allowing the locals to harvest his remains.
Buff hunt sounds fun. I have a 45-70 trapdoor Springfield circa 1891 that was cut down (butchered) by someone in the far past. I cut it down further and mounted a tang sight (had to make a tang first).
Always wanted to shoot Buff with it. If you don’t mind me asking where is your hunt to take place?
I remember advice an old gunslinger was giving a young man. “Never smile when you shoot a man.” It seems that’s probably good advice across the board.

My understanding is that older male giraffes maintain a harem of female giraffes that they use for breeding, even after age catches up with the older male, and he is "shooting blanks" and no longer reproducing. In other words, the older male giraffe is still boinking his harem, but he ain't making any babies. When a hunter or predator takes out an old male giraffe, a young male giraffe in the prime of his reproductive life takes over the harem to produce a baby boom. I also understand that hunting fees are used to fund the conservation efforts and that the hunters are required to provide the meat from the giraffes to the locals.

Never shot a man, General. Killed around 30 deer. I smiled a lot. Till the work started. Gutting in the woods. The long drag. Then skinning, quartering and butchering....still smiled a bit but also grunted and grimaced. The hunt ends once the final shot is taken. Trained my 3 boys to do the dirty work now. As I rarely hunt anymore, when they kill game, they know work must follow.
Still plenty of smiles to go around. (Most pictures of us over fallen game is with smiles...if you look sad you shouldn’t be hunting, though stoicism works for some in pictures)
Just so happens her Browning also wears a tang sight. We’ll be hunting in West Texas on a private ranch, it’s 140 sections. He started this herd in 1940 and has some huge Bull’s running around. My wife shoots the Browning very well but carrying it may be another story, she’s 5-2 an about 120 lbs. That rifle weighs 12 lbs, looks like I’ll also be a gun porter. The buffalo hang out in the northern end of the ranch where it’s allot more open, I’ll do good to get her within about 150 yards if we’re lucky. Getting in close enough for the bow will be even tougher. It’s a 60 lb Samick Bamboo Raider and I’ll be shooting 500 grain total weight arrows. If I can get inside 35 yards I’m pretty sure I can put one in the boiler room, at 40 yards I can keep 3 shots inside a 8 inch pie plate. Had to buy another freezer last year after she took two whitetail bucks and a 5x5 bull elk, if we just get one buff it looks like I’ll be getting another for the garage.
If you put a cigarette in both their mouths it would look like they just had a session of beastiality.
Last night I was roused from my tent and forced to shoot a giraffe in my pajamas...How it got in to my pajamas I’ll never know!
