SC Supreme Court orders judge to hear Michael Slager case

Solicitor Scarlett Wilson released the document from the state's supreme court naming Clifton Newman to hear the case.

"I received this via email from Court Administration late this afternoon," said Wilson in a Facebook post on Tuesday regarding the order."While I was unaware this was in the works, it is not without precedent for the Chief Justice to assign judges to cases, sua sponte."

A South Carolina Judicial Department website lists Newman, 63, as a judge based in Kingstree. [...] On Monday, Wilson said South Carolina's death penalty provision did not appear to apply to Slager's case in the death of Walter Scott.

"Based on the facts thus far, it does not appear South Carolina's death penalty provision applies in this case because there are no statutory 'aggravating circumstances' present," Wilson said in a press release.

Posted in chat. After having seen some of the entertaining comments in threads of this nature, I only put “conspiracy” in the topic and keyword list as a joke. Bad joke, I know. ;-)

Anyway, for your information,...

I think the SC Supreme Court wanted to make sure a black judge was assigned the case. I’m assuming this black judge won’t be like that other black judge who recently gave a black perp PROBATION for committing an armed home invasion robbery and turned around and called the victims of that home invasion RACISTS.

It’s an OBAMANATION we’re living in for the time being.

"He may walk."

You think?

From the publicity about some of his past cases, looks like he's an equal opportunity hangin' judge, so to speak--a highly respected hangin' judge with a remarkably bright academic and career history.

I doubt it...I think he will plead to man slaughter.

He moved the Taser...that means he knew right away he screwed up...and tried to cover it up.

I figured that the death penalty would be off the table - premeditation would be almost impossible to prove. Beyond that...?

In a perfect world you would be correct but there’s another reason for moving it. Evidence can disappear at the crime scene.

Tons of local places used to send me to stores in that area if the were out of something which I did appreciate but now I say no thanks, order it.

BS...there were at least 9 cops on the scene within minutes.

He actually jogged to grab it and move it quickly...

His motive is self evident.

He knew he screwed up.

LOL, flip it around and have the cop shot dead as he was running away, you'd see murder one so fast it would make your head spin.

Beyond that, the cop will get double-secret probation, some therapist hand-holding and a fat pension, what else? All cop badges are 007 now, didn't you know that?

Agreed. I wouldn't venture to guess how it will turn out.

Unless he states in his report that the suspect had his taser or that the taser was found beside the suspect the movement of the taser is meaningless. Since he was no longer in possession of the taser he might have thought the suspect had it. His report is the key, if it says he went back and got the taser that’s the end of any he planted it idea’s.

Picking up the taser and putting it back in the holster might not be considered tampering with evidence. Had it been his duty weapon or backup weapon would he be expected to leave it on the ground 30 to 40 ft away?

Ok...so why did he pick it up twice?

At the 1 minute mark Slagor jogs back to retrieve the taser...at 1.30 he drops it by scott..

At the 2 minute mark you can clearly see him pick up the taser that he tossed down and holster it on his left side.

It was tampering and rearranging the crime scene, and he contaminated the evidence with Scott’s DNA,
