Vanity: Razor$$$$Blade$$$ & Razors
4/3/15 | cgasmia

Tired of paying through the nose for "Gimmick" razors with 2&3 blades that do nothing but clog. Looking into a Ole'fashioned Double edge and have seen a few on E Bay and the bald guy from Pawn Stars latest addition at Walgreens for 20 bucks. Never did electric. Wish I kept my 1st Gillette.

Any thoughts?

I am a new Harry’s customer. 16 blades is $25 or $1.56 per blade. That is comparable to the lower quality generic brands.

If clogging is your only problem us dish soap. I used Dawn when I ran out of gel and never went back. Rinses out of razor way better.

I’ve tried the different cartridge brands - all much the same.

For the last year, I’ve had the absolute closest shaves from DE blades - specifically using the “Feathers” blades from Japan. Feathers makes ultra-high quality medical blades and they are considered the sharpest in the world.

eBay has a Feathers starter kit of 5 blades and their entry level plastic handle razor that has a moderate shaving angle. Nice intro into DE shaving.

Blades can be purchased in packs that cost ~ 30 cents/blade and each blade easily lasts 1 week or more depending on your beard.

Personally, I use Feathers blades and the 3-piece “Edwin Jagger” Chatsworth with the long 4” faux ivory handle.

I also HIGHLY recommend the Italian shaving soap “Cella” in a red plastic tub - light years beyond gels, foams, etc. The ABSOLUTE best!!!!

I’ve been using disposable razors for at least 5 years and have no complaints. They’re cheap, light weight, do a good job and last quite a long time.

Does anyone know why the spate of alternative razor commercials are flooding the airways?

Pandering to the facial hair styling millennial hipster douchebag crowd.

Using my Dad’s old Gillette. You can find one on ebay for just a few bucks, or go to Art Of Shaving and spend hundreds on a new designer version. Order Feather blades from Amazon, along with Proraso pre-shave cream. Get a good lather soap and brush and begin to enjoy the ritual of shaving. Check out http://www.badgerandblade.com/ for everything you ever wanted to know about shaving.

I ordered Feather double edged blades from Amazon, they are super sharp so you have to be a little more careful until you’re used to them.

When I run the water I add baby shampoo to it, makes a more comfortable shave and eliminates razor burn.

I made the switch to a DE safety razor in early January and wish I had done so years, no, decades ago. After reading reviews I choose an Edwin Jagger DE89lbl razor with 5 sample blades for 32 dollars on Amazon.

For a cream I got the Taylor of Old Bond Street (TOBS) Sandlewood cream and Everyman Jack Sandlewood aftershave. I like it a lot but then I found a sampler of TOBS cream and feel in love the Eaton College cream. Smells very nice. A lot of folks use a hard shaving soap, which lasts longer and is cheaper in the long run.

On weekends I am using Proraso Menthol and Eucalyptus preshave, shaving cream and aftershave. It sets my entire face into a tingle mode, I see it as a special shave for my days off. I used to avoid shaving on Saturdays, but now I look forward to doing so!

A badger brush finishes it all up, found one on Amazon for $15. I use an old coffe mug to whip up my lather.

I also found a sampler of blades and am still trying to decide which works best for me. Feather blades are said to be the sharpest, but my face looks like it has been through a meat grinder after using them. Every man will like a different blade, so play around. You can buy many of the quality blades, 100 for 15-20 dollars. Each blade is good for 2-3 shaves. (Oh, figure out what to do with them, don't just throw them in the trash.)

The first time you shave is very tricky. Why? Mass market razors allow you to be very sloppy in your technique. With a DE razor you need to take your time and let the weight of the razor do the work. The first two or three times I shaved I did cut myself, which seems to be a common theme. Have a styptic pencil close by to control your bleeding. It is hard to undo 30 years of muscle memory, but I have now gotten to the point where I don't have to concentrate at all.

If you are going to do this I recommend that you watch a lot of the videos on YouTube, read some of the shaving forums and get smart from the experts before you invest in anything.

Feather blades for a newbie?!? Are you trying to kill him!

Spot on with the Proraso though. Makes shaving fun!

When I remodelled our bathroom I picked up a dozen or so of those blades from the wall. I kept telling myself, too early for AIDS and the virus would be dead anyway.

I went "old school" last January and haven't looked back. I use an old "Super Speed" non-adjustable Gillette that was either my dad's or grandfather's. (Also have an adjustable that was Dad's.) Cleaned it up and tried sampler razor packs from Amazon and the generic ones from CVS. Different strokes for different folks but I've settled in on Shark brand from Egypt. (Apparently originally Wilkinson Sword in Egypt.) I don't have a heavy beard and these last me a week plus. $8 for 100. I do hear great things about Feather.

My wife has made me shave soap and aftershave but I also have purchased Van Der Hagen soap. I might spend a minute or two more in the morning now, but adding a little ritual to that part of the day has been a net plus. Also like the idea of using a 50 or 60 year old razor every day.

I’m glad you found a setup you like, but for me (and I suspect a few others) shaving is something we -have- to do, and want to do as quickly and conveniently as possible. It’s not a hobby.

The big name razor refills are now priced like the blades are made of pure platinum, hand mined on an asteroid.

I’ll second the Harry’s referal. After hubby discovered them, I made the $15.00 starter kits my Christmas gift to all the male family members and they are all raving about them. The blades last a long time. I have my own too! I never get nicked.

Then you're not doing it right ;)

I know it's hard to believe, but I have read SO many stories that mirror my own I have to believe there's something to it.

Many of us that have made an investment in the shaving experience actually look forward to it as a respite rather than a chore.
