Microsoft has shipped a new build of Windows 10 that offers a first look at its much-hyped Project Spartan web browser, but the software giant has cautioned that developers may want to hold off upgrading.

In a Monday blog post, Redmond man Gabe Aul said Project Spartan is the main feature of Windows 10 Build 10049, which is rolling out now to testers on the Fast release ring of the Windows Insider program.

But he added that the build also causes problems with Visual Studio 2015, the preview version of Microsoft's integrated development environment, and that coders who are using VS2015 to build Windows Universal Apps should probably stick to the older Build 10041 for now.

I've played with previous builds of Windows 10 a little, but not this new one. I think Windows 10 may turn out to be quite good. Certainly Microsoft needs a winner this time -- Windows 8 was pretty much a disaster like Vista. Which incidentally is a shame because under the hood, Win 8 is actually a perfectly fine OS. It's only the GUI that sucks for so many people.

I'll be honest -- I'm a Win 7 fan today. That could change after Win 10 comes out and I see what they've settled on.

Windows® 8.1 is superior to Windows® 7 in every conceivable way. Spend two days getting used to the mouse click start screen as nothing more than a larger programs pop-up and train your sub-cortical response on reflexively getting back to the desktop and you'll never look back. The task-manager improvements alone are worth switching.

Windows® 10 new build looks very good, but anyone who installs a CTP or Beta of any product in anything but a VM is a fool. On modern hardware you can easily run Windows® 10, a Windows® 8.1 instance with VS2015, and your own bare metal with VS2013 and your production tool-chain on the same box at the same time. With bridged adapters it looks no different -- and if you have enough memory -- performs better than three networked PC's.

Well, yes, of course. I would certainly hope anyone savvy enough to be fooling around with pre-release builds knows enough to do so in a safe and suitable manner. Virtual environments have been around for long enough, and the free versions are powerful enough, that there's rarely any excuse for putting anything but a hypervisor on bare metal.

Well, I'll put it this way (and caveat: this is just my own perspective).

When Vista came out it was a major departure from the then-current XP mindset. That might have been okay, but Microsoft had screwed the pooch with schedule, stability, UAC, a lot of things, so Vista was correctly perceived as a great blunder -- even though it had tremendous advances under the hood.

Windows 7 was essentially Vista, but done properly. And it rocks.

Well, Microsoft repeated the pattern. Windows 8 was another major departure from the Windows 7 mindset. But they screwed the pooch again, this time by trying to force the Metro interface into an environment where it made no sense (the non-touch desktop), so Win8 was correctly perceived as a great blunder -- even though again it had great features and capabilities under the hood.

I view Windows 10 as essentially Windows 8, but done properly.

We have yet to see if it rocks, but IMO the prognosis is good.

If that's what it takes to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1, I'll pass. Sounds like an invitation to join the Borg or something.

I just want a stable operating system that I'm not forced to abandon every three to five years. I liked XP a lot, then settled in nicely with 7. Now folks are trying to get me to move again. Sheeesh...

I still run WXP SP3 w/FF 36 and several extensions along with AVG & MalwareBytes

PC runs great and no problems.

No need or desire for a bloated OS like W10
