Collapse of the universe coming sooner than expected according to new research

You've heard of the Big Bang, but what about the "Colossal Crash?" Get ready, because it might be coming sooner than you think ... relatively speaking.

In a paper published in Physical Review Letters a group of physicists have theorized a mechanism for "cosmological collapse" which predicts the universe will at some point stop expanding and then collapse back onto itself, destroying us and pretty much all matter.

The idea has been floating around the scientific community in one form or another for a while now, but the latest paper is noteworthy because its numbers and models suggest that collapse is "imminent" -- at least on a cosmological scale.

"The fact that we are seeing dark energy now could be taken as an indication of impending doom, and we are trying to look at the data to put some figures on the end date," Antonio Padilla at the University of Nottingham, one of the paper's authors, told Phys.org. "Early indications suggest the collapse will kick in in a few tens of billions of years, but we have yet to properly verify this."

Our universe is currently in a period of accelerated expansion so we have nothing to worry about for the moment, but in the paper's conclusion, the team of scientists claim they've found the cause our impending doom ... but they need to do a bit more research.

But you didn’t clean out the coffee pot and the coffee turned into dark matter. So it’s your fault.

Do I still have time to mow the lawn?

Perhaps, but why bother?

From what I've understood for some time, there didn't appear to be enough mass in the universe to halt and reverse the expansion of the Big Bang. (This reversal might be known as the Gnab Gib). If the Gnab Gib can't happen, then the universe would be doomed to eventual heat death as the overall temperature of the universe would slowly approach absolute zero.

Not a pleasant end. IMO.

I like the idea of a Gnab Gib, and the possibility of it's eventual reversal into a new Big Bang. Everything else in God's creation seems to be cyclical, why not the universe itself?.

Well then its settled. We must stop using fossil fuels.

Being a computer geek, I wonder if there isn’t come connection with this whole idea of the universe constantly expanding and then suddenly collapsing one day and the concept where when you exceed your total memory and it suddenly goes negative.

If you ever did basic programming and ran into an infinite loop, your counter would increment indefinitely and hit total memory and suddenly go negative and start going down (relatively speaking). I know it seems like a stupid question to ask, but are the scientist’s computers crunching the numbers and getting so large that it is running out of memory and reporting the negative value so that it seems like the universe is suddenly shrinking when really it won’t?

It was settled science until another group of scientists got a new source of grant funding to prove the collapsing universe is the theory to explain life, the universe and everything. If it was settled science, someone would be out of a job.

I’d say we could stave off universal collapse by raising taxes on “the rich”.

What happens if we exceed God's counter?

Oh Noes!!!!!!!!

Can you imagine what liberals would be like if we were way far along in the Gnab Gib? They'd be yelling about our SUVs causing the universe to collapse!

Liberals are neo-luddites who aren't honest enough to admit it, or their continued sad devotion to the temple of Malthus.

Keep it quiet .... Fat Al, His Arrogance and the EPA will want to start a “collapse” tax.

It figures. Just as soon as the Mariners get a decent team the dang universe collapses on us. I knew they shouldn’t have traded Saunders.

Not a problem - just go to the Great Attractor (the Xeelee’s Ring) and escape to another universe ...

And if that doesn’t work we can try giving nuclear weapons to our enemies.

Clinton gave the Chinese the ability to land a nuke anywhere on the planet. They were having trouble before he allowed a campaign contributor, Lorale, sell the tech to the Chinese.
