Downton and out: 6th series will be last as cast gather to read through the new script

The doors to Downton Abbey are finally closing.

Carnival Films and ITV have announced that there will be no return to the famous home of the Crawley family after the sixth season airs, as they want to end on a high.

Downton Abbey has been a huge international success, selling to broadcasters around the world, but its ratings in Britain had started flagging.

NBC Universal, which owns the production company behind the show, said in an internal note to staff that the long-running drama was ‘approaching its natural conclusion’.

The internal note, seen by the Daily Mail, said: ‘Whilst we are all sad to see Julian Fellowes and Gareth Neame’s unique drama approaching its natural conclusion, the difficult decision has been taken to wrap up production while the show is still at its peak – in popularity, as well as in the quality of the storylines and the series overall.

‘Rather than allow any further media speculation about the show’s future, we want to use today’s announcement to build anticipation for the momentous final season’.

“Waiting for Selfridge to return.”

I’ll have to check that one out. I believe we will get one last year of Doc Martin early next year, love that show.

We like Jesse Stone too. Love his dog. Looks just like my (late) Max. They had a new one about 6 weeks ago”

I think you missed one as the last new episode was in 2012 “Benefit of a Doubt” The good news is that the Hallmark channel is financing a new one this fall “Lost in Paradise “ There should be one more after that.

Soap opera, yes. But it’s incredibly well done. Everything about it from the filming, to the acting, to the costumes, to the writing, to the music is excellent.

That sounds more to my liking...although my folks were still the downstairs people during the Gilded Age.

I thought I was going to like Grantchester, too, until the homo suff.

Have you seen the Father Brown mysteries? I love them. Quite a few excellent character actors.

I read the whole Father Brown series decades ago when I was a teenager. The whole spirit and intelligence of Father Brown has been retained in this series.

Definitely excellent production values.

As an antique lover, I am always checking these shows to see that all the props, etc., are authentic to the period.

Haven’t found a single anachronism on Downton.
