As part of the American Army's 45th Infantry Division, he had killed many Germans as he fought through Africa, Italy and southern France, before finally, in March 1945, he and his Sherman tank had crossed the Rhine into Germany. By April 15, 1945, Mariano had been away from his home in New Mexico for nearly three years. A father of three, the 29-year-old was divorced, although he did have a girlfriend in England.

The Soviets raped gazillions. 100,000 Berlin women committed suicide after being raped. Did the Western allies rape over 200,000? That figure seems way too high.
Certainly the Russians did it and were brutal.

My own feeling is that, while obviously rapes occurred, many of the rape stories have been invented by leftists who have obvious reasons for inventing these mass rape stories. The fact that twenty-nine GIs were hanged for rape leads me to believe most soldiers studiously avoided assaulting German women for fear of the ultimate punishment.
This is most likely just typical leftists making unfounded smears and insinuations for ideological reasons.
Occam's razor. Many young German woman were in severe straights directly after the war. Several million young, male German soldiers were dead and many more severely maimed. Allied soldiers became the "benefactors" of their, German women, sorry situations.
When I was in the Army, a sign was posted there warning that rape is a crime.
My mother who had just turned 13 at the time of the Russian invasion of Berlin was cornered by a drunken, armed soldier in her family’s apartment - maybe he had official business or not, I don’t know. While her mother and grandmother were crying in another room he attempted to restrain my mom and by God’s grace she was able to elude him and dash out of the building. She hid for several hours before being brave enough to go home. The Russians were pigs.
A lot of the supposed rapes by Americans were probably barter on the most primitive scale. Seventy years later they turn into rape.
There were 1.5 million American servicemen stationed in Germany eventually. Did 1 in 6 of them have sex with the local women? I’m supposing that the author might label, “rape” any instance of sexual relations between a soldier from an occupying army and a local from the occupied territory. It may not be the sort of violent, brutal horror of war that the term brings to the imagination, but it is also a deeply problematic ethical issue. And I might even argue that the women who were the more readily “seduced” were probably also among the more innocent of the charge of supporting the genocidal madness of Hitler: passive, independent, willing to approach “the enemy...”

I just can’t believe that as a RULE, American troops acted like the Russians did. The Russians were led by a murderous godless tyrant, Stalin, whereas Eisenhower and Patton seemed to have a strong code of moral(Christian-based) conduct on the order of George Washington.
