Portion Size: The Elephant in the Room
Victoria Times-Colonist ^ | 25 March, 2015 | Dr. Trevor Hancock

By now, everybody knows we are in the midst of an epidemic of overweight and obesity in Canada and around the world. There is a horrifying series of maps showing the rate of obesity spreading like a red stain across Canada over the past 30 years. In its latest fact sheet, the World Health Organization reports that “worldwide obesity has nearly doubled since 1980” and that “35 per cent of adults aged 20 and over were overweight in 2008, and 11 per cent were obese.” In Canada, it is much the same. The Public Health Agency of Canada reported in 2011 that obesity rates had roughly doubled between 1981 and 2008. In 2013, the self-reported body mass index of 62 per cent of men and 45 per cent of women over age 18 revealed they were overweight or obese. - See more at: http://www.timescolonist.com/opinion/columnists/trevor-hancock-portion-size-the-elephant-in-the-room-1.1803186#sthash.c2O5oTs6.dpuf

So, the fact that the food pyramid is upside down, we consume more fake sugar and HFCS than ever before, soybeans are in everything, and we're not allowed to let our kids play outside because of busybodies like the author all have NOTHING to do with the weight gains of the last 30 years. Nice try, jerk.

The reason for the huge portion sizes is that people are constantly hungry from consuming too many carbs. Everything these experts have told us for 30 years has been completely wrong, and the results are patently obvious. The real question is when we get to put them in stockades, and throw rotten fruit at them.

People could eat like pigs and still avoid obesity with active lifestyles; the real problem is that too many people today go from their bed to a desk at work to their couch at home (and the cycle repeats itself).

True-and restaurants love giving you huge portions to justify charging you triple what it’s worth.

I order a salad and they give me more than I could eat in a week ... for $9.00

Age 65, 5'9” 155 lbs and no meds. Unnecessary body weight is a curse. When a person lets muscle mass decline and bw increase it is like loading bags of cement in the trunk of your car, then pulling a couple spark plug wires. Its just horse power to weight ratio.

Yep-I’ve heard that one’s muscle to fat ratio is key for keeping the metabolism up. So, in addition to pushing the wrong diet through the messed up food pyramid, the huge push towards aerobic instead of anaerobic workouts have made people struggle with their weight.

Pilates in middle age slimmed me more than the miles and miles I ran when in high school and college.

It would still depend a lot on what they eat. Two hours of physical work can be ruined by 45 seconds with a bag of cookies. The fat people I see on the treadmills are “exercising” for a lot longer than me, probably by a 5 to 1 ratio or better over the course of a week. Something is making them stay fat.

Very true. The only fast food I ever eat is about once every two weeks off of the Wendy’s value menu. A Jr. cheeseburger, fries, and a drink costs $3.00 plus tax. That’s actually enough for lunch (just barely), and I weigh 215 lbs. I see women 8 inches shorter than me eating literally three times that much.

Professor at UVIC, apparently. Petty little micro-manager that knows better than we what we want, in his not-so-humble-opinion, too.

Doc Trevor can stop worrying once Mrs. Obama’s diet Nazis get control of everyones’ meals. We’ll be safe then and live forever lean, with huge butts.

These are just round figures.

Yup.

I'm in my 50’s and have the same lean, muscular bod I had in my 20’s.people think I don't eat but I eat enough and get lots of produce and meat. Dairy I don't care for unless It's cheese or yogurt. I get calcium through pills. I do walk as I have an energetic lab. But you see the same people busting it out on the treadmills that seem to stay fay as ever
