Nebraska senator compares police to ISIS, suggests he’d shoot a cop

A Nebraska state senator compared American police to Islamic terrorists and suggested he'd shoot a cop if only he had a weapon.

State Sen. Ernie Chambers said during a legislative hearing on March 20 that you don't have to go halfway around the world to find an ISIS mentality. It can be found in America because police terrorize blacks every day.

He was referring to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, which has beheaded journalists and brutally executed Westerners and others.

"My ISIS is the police," Chambers, an independent, said, adding police can get away with shooting people if they "think" they're going to do something -- like pull a weapon.

"The police are licensed to kill us -- children, old people," he said.

Nebraska's longest serving senator, Chambers represents north Omaha, a high-crime area where racial tension simmers and sometimes erupts after encounters with police. In March 2013, for example, police threw a man to the ground and pummeled him while 32 police officers stormed a home across the street, in response to a parking complaint. Four police officers were fired amid allegations of excessive force, evidence tampering and a police cover-up.

Why is this guy even in the Nebraska legislature? He should be censured or expelled for the most outrageous comments about killing cops. This on the morning after two cops were murdered in California and Wisconsin over night.

The story said that this guy’s district is in Omaha - maybe that’s why Payton Manning yells OMAHA before the snap. Trying to scare the crap out of the defensive backs...I said Backs not Blacks

Exactly. I know this is an old guy, who was said many crazy things...but ignoring his statements is not acceptable. At a bare minimum, he should be ousted.

He’s been in the legislature since the 60s with a few years off in that span.

He represents North Omaha and is a fixture that his nitwit constituents will always vote for. He maintains a “residence” in his district but lives in a more upscale west Omaha residence with his girlfriend. Typical democrat.

He’s always made outrageous statements and few in the legislature will ever take any action. Nebraska basks in the mythical fiction that they have a non-partisan, unicameral legislature. Pure BS, they are elected as GOP or Dem and they act that way and the democrats will always act that way by voting or ignoring actions that issue from that bunghole known as the Democrat party.

Yeah, I live two states away from Nebraska and have heard of nitwit multiple times for outrageous statements just like this. It’s the same crowd that returns Jackson-Lee from her Houston district to Congress. Gerrymandering will ensure this continues, with the explicit support of the courts.

Chambers, an independent, said, adding police can get away with shooting people if they "think" they're going to do something -- like pull a weapon.

In this much he's right. There are legions of people who were unarmed and who were shot and killed by police who tried to justify the murders by saying they were in fear for their lives.

The case of the Albuquerque cops murdering a homeless man comes to mind. But despite the usual bleatings of 'I was afraid!' the video put the lie to their claims and these criminals are going to face justice.

The standard I put on the police for justifiable force is if an ordinary citizen did the same thing would they face charges? If not then the shooting is justifiable. If yes then the cops should face charges, too.

Shiny badges do not render these people into Super Citizens who enjoy extra-Constitutional rights and privileges. Their duty is to protect the Constitution and not to rise above it.

police can get away with shooting people if they "think" they're going to do something -- like pull a weapon.

Sadly, there are many examples of this being the truth, by no means all of them having any racial component.

Cops do indeed in many cases get away with killing someone when a civilian in similar circumstances simply would not. It is also very well known that police routinely conspire to protect each other against even legitimate complaints of misuse of force.

This does not mean all such complaints are justified, but it seems highly likely some of them are.

FWIW, in 2014 British cops fired their weapons with intent to harm citizens a total of three times.

A year or so ago FR had a lot of threads and a lot of posts saying exactly what this guy said, although without the racial card playing. Seems to have lost a good bit of popularity as a POV on FR now that it's become a cops vs. blacks issue rather than a cops vs. Americans issue.

It seems likely that copcams are going to be much more common in the near future. Which will be very interesting.

There are three main things their use might show:

The number of cop shootings of civilians will go down, indicating that previous complaints of unjustified shootings were at least partly true. When they know they’re on camera, they’re less likely to shoot.

Video will show that most of the shootings by cop were justified, disproving this guy’s theory.

Video will show that many or most of the shootings are not justified, proving his theory.

It is also possible that video will often mysteriously be unavailable after a shooting, which will tend again to support the out of control cops theory.

From what I am seeing on the web in every jurisdiction in which cop cams have been implemented the number of excessive force complaints and the raw number of police shootings have declined.

Also on the web is a marked increase in the number of cops responding violently and criminally to citizens who are exercising their First Amendment right to safely video record cops as they perform their public duties.

Which of course leads me to repeat that line the police are so fond of using:

“If you’re not doing anything wrong then you’ve got nothing to worry about.”

White Freepers reflexively springing to the defense of cops accused of racist misconduct reminds me strongly of our equally reflexively springing to the defense of Business.

In both cases, Leftists use possible misconduct to try to justify horribly misguided policies. We think the policies are bad, and we dislike Leftists in general, so we tend to defend the people and groups they attack.

The problem is that the attacked groups are not necessarily in the right. Business (with a capital B), for instance, has no attachment at all to conservative principles except when its convenient for them. Nor should it. The purpose of Business is to maximize profits, and that is quite often done most effectively thru crony capitalism.

Conservatives should be in favor of Markets, not Business.

Similarly, we should be in favor of constitutional policing, not the Police.

The more he says these things, the stronger his constituents support him. He would rather hurt whites than help blacks. And, that is exactly what his constituents want.
