To Many, Fat Stigma Makes Obesity Smell Foul

New evidence of our unconscious prejudice against obese individuals comes in a study from UCLA psychologists. ( By MELISSA HEALY

Below our level of awareness lies prejudice, and it doesn't smell good Obese people have been shown to prompt more disgust than such stigmatized groups as the homeless Has the "war on obesity" claimed casualties among the obese? Experimental subjects who were tricked into thinking they should smell something reported they smelled less pleasant odors when they viewed pictures of overweight and obese people than when they gazed at trim individuals, new research has found.

The experimental exercise, conducted by psychology professors at UCLA, is a clever way to smoke out "implicit association "-- or prejudice that lies beneath the level of conscious awareness. While similar exercises have been used to explore racial and other forms of prejudice, heavy individuals in this case were shown to receive the stigma.

Diet and exercise alone are no cure for obesity, experts say Diet and exercise alone are no cure for obesity, experts say The new findings "suggest that the extent of negative bias toward overweight individuals may be greater than previously assumed," the authors of the study wrote. Previous research, they noted, suggests that prejudice against the obese -- in employment, healthcare and education -- is on the rise. They cited studies in which overweight individuals have been found to provoke "more feelings of disgust than 12 historically stigmatized groups (homeless individuals, persons with mental illness, etc.)."

The latest research, published in the International Journal of Obesity, reflect the judgments of 245 undergraduates who were asked to sniff "scent samples" and rate the odor they were presented while also viewing images of people and things.

So fat people come up to you begging for pity? Does this happen often? I would wager that no fat person in the world gives a sh*t what you think. And how many 5 minute miles have you run? Have you been drinking the ethanol again?

There are people with different metabolisms. Some people can eat 4000 calories a day and not gain a pound. I worked out with this Asian guy who wanted to pump up. He ate a tremendous amount of food and took supplements to boot He estimated he was eating 4-5K cals a day. He never gained much weigh at all and when he stopped working out he lost weight! If I ate like him I would weigh 400 pounds. So people are different.

It gets interesting being at the other end of that spectrum, too. I have such a slow metabolism that I have to keep my intake below 1200 kcals a day or else I'll gain weight. But eating so little also means not getting enough other nutrients. And since supplements make me sick, I have a choice between putting on weight but getting the nutrients, or keeping a stable weight but ending up in the ER every now and then due to deficiencies.

(Still looking for the balancing point.)

Cindy Crawford was never heavily or even moderately overweight in high school. That is easy enough to prove with a quick internet search. Here is a photo of her at 16:
(Don’t worry, it’s very tame.)

You said it.

Behaviors are different than diseases, but we're living in an amoral time, so overindulgence to the point of self destruction, whether it's food or alcohol or gambling or sex or drugs, is a "disease."

Which of course, is a lie, or if it's a disease, it's self-inflicted and self-cured. Truth: It's a behavior, and that's where the cure is. It's always been that way and will always be that way.

I feel bad for fat folks, I really do. They don't know how to eat smart, and cheap easy food is mostly crap food. Just the same, calling a behavior a "disease" absolves personal responsibility, even the moral obligation for it, and that's bound to go bad.

I don't know what you look like, but the minute you put out a jackass speech like that one, I'd run the 5-minute mile, like hell, the other way.

Given the choice: better wide than shallow.

I think many fat people do know how to eat properly or smart, they just don’t like that food, so they eat what they want and eat as much as they want.

I know how to eat smart and I eat smarter, but I eat stuff that isn’t great for me. I don’t eat more than I should and I take a lot of supplements and herbs and vitamins to make up for some of the bad stuff.

I have such a slow metabolism that I have to keep my intake below 1200 kcals a day or else I'll gain weight.

You might not be physically able (don't know), but it would be interesting to see what would happen if you adopted the habit of vigorous sustained-heart-rate exercise three or four days a week, or more? Not a 40 minute workout, but a 70 minute one? Sweat-poppin, water-guzzlin' workout? Would it speed up your metabolism, I wonder?

I know my metabolism is much better when I exercise vigorously at least a few days a week.

Supplements are a lousy way to get nutrients. It's better to get them from simple foods.

...but I eat stuff that isn’t great for me...

The older I get, the more I think that there's very little that isn't great for you. About the only things really bad for you, in my opinion, are hydrogenated vegetable fats like Crisco and margarine; fake sugar (sugar substitutes); high fructose corn syrup ... and that's about it. Those things are downright bad, and I only eat them on rare social occasions.

Everything else is good for you, but of course sugar (good old cane sugar) and anything with white flour, is better used sparingly. It's all great for you. It just has to be in the right proportions.

Well, that fat and ugly toad turned into Cindy Crawford.

Did you see the unretouched photos that came out last month of Ms. Crawford? Woof! Her classmates were spot on. LOL. Get it, "spot" on.

The most overweight I ever got was 60 pounds, which definitely is fat. That’s when I stopped drinking alcohol. Now I am 20 pounds overweight. I was dieting and losing weight but a year ago I started having serious receding gums issues and had four teeth removed.

I figured losing weight now and becoming smaller might cost me more teeth. Maybe I should put 10 or 20 pounds on. Recently I went food shopping, picked up daughter from kindergarten and sat in a small park on the way home.

While we were sitting, I pulled out a large chocolate bunny and offered a piece but she didn’t want. Then I pulled out a liter of milk. My daughter put her open palm to me and made a face like what the heck are you doing?

I told her Da-Da has health issues.

But yesterday my wife called a dentist who did a deep cleaning of her father’s gums that stalls receding gums for 10 years.

I told my wife in 10 years I am going to get fat...ter.

I never once saw a picture of a fat person in a concentration camp.

Eat less calories = get thinner, guaranteed.

Yes most people that weigh too much have lifestyle issues but you can’t just tell them to get off their butt.

It is difficult to lose weight doing only cardio a 40 minute to 70 minute cardio program will just result in a heart attack or a discouraged person. Additionally overweight people shouldn’t run a mile because of the extra stress on knees and ankles.

Doing only cardio makes you hungry so it is harder to control what you eat.

I can ride the bike at 12-14mph 50 miles a day and not lose much weight because my form is good and I understand the technique.

The trick to losing weight for me is to not eat after about 6 to 8 PM in the evening and to not snack in the day and doing so very basic weights.

Dieting is problematic because most people that gain weight gain something like 1/2 pound a month over several years that works out to LITERALLY something like 50 to 60 calories a day which is 1 mouthful of food per day. (2 french fries, or 1/2 cookie) You just can’t measure your intake that accurately

You can be every kind of a moral monster, but it usually doesn’t show on the outside. However, if you eat too much, it shows, and every kind of moral monster gets the opportunity to feel superior to you.

Oh, I don’t know....

I’ve had some great great fun at the expense of coothless bastards whose latest weight loss was from the top of their heads.

I’ve always said “if you’re gonna break bad on fat, don’t be bald.”
