Men who open doors for women are as guilty of sexism as those who are rude to them, according to a new study.
Psychologists found that a friendly or chivalrous attitude can mask chauvinistic and patronizing views because the men see females as weak creatures in need of their protection.
They warned that this “benevolent sexism” was harder to spot than the hostile version borne out of an open antipathy.
Jin Goh, a psychologist from Northeastern University, Boston, in the U.S., said: “While many people are sensitive to sexist verbal offences, they may not readily associate sexism with warmth and friendliness. Unless sexism is understood as having both hostile and benevolent properties, the insidious nature of benevolent sexism will continue to be one of the driving forces behind gender inequality.”

For 40 years I’ve been hearing this crap, as well as the variant that women routinely chew out men who hold doors for them.
Through all this time I’ve always held the door for a woman whenever possible, and I have never once been verbally abused for doing so.
I have occasionally been amused by the female who sweeps through ignoring my courtesy as if she were Hillary, but even they are rare.
20 years ago we were driving across TX in a UHaul. Stopped for dinner. My 15 year old daughter was approaching the door and a handsome young guy in a cowboy hat and starched white shirt came sprinting across the parking lot, removed his hat and opened the door for her. She’s been partial to Texas ever since.
There's the biggest problem right there. I find Psychologists themselves are usually oddballs, and there so-called "science" is anything but.
Curiously, the authors don’t object to throwing black cloth over women and treating them as a man’s servile property.
