I loved Spock, said President Obama, reacting to the death of actor Leonard Nimoy. Why? Because Spock reminds him of himself. The galaxys most famous Vulcan, the president wrote, was Cool, logical, big-eared, and level headed, the center of Star Treks optimistic, inclusive vision of humanitys future. Just like you know whom.
The president is not the only writer who has drawn comparisons between himself and Spock. I am also a Star Trek fan, but I admit I was somewhat confused by my rather apathetic reaction to Nimoys death. And as I thought more about the presidents statement, I realized he identifies with the very aspects of the Spock character that most annoy me. I dont love Spock at all.

Bump
Kill Spock! lol
fixed, no charge !
Bravo !
These people act as though Spock was a real person.
His character was the amalgamation of many writers based on a theme, and performed well by a mid level actor.
If we all had several people writing every conversation we had, we could all be clever, smart, witty, and seductive.
Instead we have to rely on seven pounds of gelatin inside our skulls.
The fact that our President acts as if he doesn’t understand Spock wasn’t real is a little creepy.
(from IMDB):
Captain James T. Kirk: Spock... what does 'Herbert' mean?
Spock: It is, um... uh, somewhat, um... uncomplimentary, Captain. Herbert was a minor official - notorious for his rigid and limited patterns of thought.
(sounds familiar)
Loved that episode.
I picked up on hippie Charles Napier's "Gonna crack my knuckles and jump for joy. Got a clean bill of health from Doc McCoy".
I used that term on my wife when I came out of the doc's office at the VA clinic. So help me, another gray-beard looked up and said "He reaches!". We both cracked up while the wife looked at us as if we were crazy. (I suspect she is a Romulan :-) ).
Yes, this article mostly points out what an amoral, often severely destructive but "logical" person Spock was AFTER TOS.
In Mirror, Mirror, we get a glimpse of just how cleanly Spock fits into an alternate, evil universe.
He has no problem with using an "agonizer" on Mr. Kyle, and comments on how torture is "most effective" on Chekhov.
Plus he has no qualms about wiping out the entire planet below.
Seeing that (and reading this piece) made me re-think my love for the character.
Well done.
