When it was released 50 years ago, The Sound of Music became one of the most successful films of all time. It was based on the true story of the von Trapp family (above) - but what did they think of it and was their life really like it was portrayed in the movie?
"Everyone thinks the Sound of Music was exactly the way things happened, and of course it wasn't because there had to be artistic licence," says Johannes von Trapp. He is the youngest son of Georg and Maria - the decorated naval commander and singing nun turned governess of the film.

I would have liked even to have seen the real life story from the making of the movie where the camera helicopter’s downwash kept knocking Julie Andrews down.

Still a great story. and great music. I love most of the songs.

They live in one of the two main states formed from the German nation.
Up to 150 years ago, Austria was the leading German state. It wasn't until Prussia won several wars that it took that position away from Austria, kicked Austria out of the German "nation," and became Germany.
If the same criteria had been applied to the German nation that was applied to the Italian nation, then Austria would have been part of the German state.
Appalachians have a long long history and tradition of mountain singers but then Appalachia is a large large area.
Alison Krauss does a haunting rendition of a true story of 2 children lost in the Allegheny Mountains. The song “Jacob’s Dream” was written to be sung in the echoing hills where the children were lost:

And one of my favorite unknown but world class talents is Stacey Earle who belts out vocals with no instruments that were created from singers in the mountains of Tennessee, I saw her perform in the Tractor Tavern about 4 years ago and she is incredible. She sang one mountain song without any instruments and it resonated the whole room. Her husband Mark Stuart toured and played with Beatle George Harrison and is as fine an instrumentalist and vocalist as they come. These are people that can make the quiet airwaves of Appalachia come alive with voice alone.

I can’t breathe...
It was the first movie I saw in a theater so it’s close to my heart. I it used to air on tv in January. I had taken a new job in a new city and when I plugged the tv in the first night, it was showing.
No, I never thought it was true to life and can’t imagine anyone would. However, I can understand people asking him if such and such from the movie really happened.
Two summers ago our youngest daughter and her 3 daughters - the youngest age 6 - were cast in ‘Sound Of Music’ at the community theater in Ojai, Calif.
Daughter played the woman Captain von Trapp was engaged to until Maria came along. (I did not get the idea Maria went about on purpose to break up that engagement).
In the party scene, daughter wore a beautiful red gown as she descended the stairway - the audience always gasped. Daughter is not, say, Rita Hayworth gorgeous, but is rather charismatic on stage.
It was a sensational summer, and we all hated to see it end.
PS Some told daughter to have the red gown ‘mysteriously’ disappear from wardrobe, but it should still be there!
That is hilarious, caught me by surprise.
I had never heard ‘Lady Gaga sing before, but am told those in the industry knew she had a good singing voice.
Going back years now, it seems to be necessary to have some sort of schtick to make you stand out among the herd of performers.
So Lady Gaga has hers, which masked an actual singing voice.
Glad we all now know.
One of my favorite Oscars moments was from sometime in the 1980s...part of the show was a film depiction of why that obscure category called “cinematography” is so important. They had precisely matched key scenes from great movies with utterly incorrect soundtracks. I recall the chariot race from “Ben Hur” with audio from an auto race (complete with wrecks), Superman flying off a building to the sound of a chirping bird...and the opening scenes from “The Sound Of Music”, with Maria running around on a Swiss mountaintop...to the sounds of airplanes making strafing runs.
