When it was released 50 years ago, The Sound of Music became one of the most successful films of all time. It was based on the true story of the von Trapp family (above) - but what did they think of it and was their life really like it was portrayed in the movie?
"Everyone thinks the Sound of Music was exactly the way things happened, and of course it wasn't because there had to be artistic licence," says Johannes von Trapp. He is the youngest son of Georg and Maria - the decorated naval commander and singing nun turned governess of the film.

Yes. I’m not sure where people like him get the idea that we are so stupid.
Only the nimble-minded.
I never thought people went around singing happily on mountain tops. I’ve had a cabin the mountains (Sierras) and now like in the Appalachians. I have never seen anybody singing, especially an entire family.
Maybe in the Rockies or Cascades....or maybe it’s just an Alpine thing.
You mean that Maria wasn’t able to use her cornette to fly?

Every time a film based on historical events comes out there’s a chorus of people including here who accuse it of ‘lies’.
Well, Germans do tend to yodel - a lot.
Saw this movie in the theater as a kid. It remains one of my all-time favorite movies.
I first saw Sound of Music in a Chicago downtown theater in 1965 (?) and that turned me on to musicals.
They always forget the zombies.
Imagine Julie Andrews singing and dancing on a mountain top. Suddenly five hundred zombies come up over the hill, surround and devour her. One sees her sinking down in the mob of living dead all while they make chomping and slurping sounds.
Actually, some people DO think what they see in movies is reality. After Victor/Victoria came out years ago, a friend remarked to me that she didn’t realize Robert Preston was gay. All I could do was stare at her.
And it’s also the problem with historical dramas, that too many people think the story is true & don’t realize the license taken by Hollyweird. Very annoying.
Oliver Stone masterpiece of the telling of the assassination of JFK comes to mind...
Just kidding about the masterpiece...
