Is that a photoshop or a pit bull-daschund mix?

Question to all. Mr C4E is allergic to cats and dogs. Now that I am retired I would love to get another dog. Live in senior mobile park, very small back yard and having daily walks not necessary (for the dog, not necessarily me). Last dog was a sheltie. Skye had 10 acres to run. So I think another sheltie is out. Plus have to think of hubbie. Suggestions welcome.

Same deal in my suburban area. Overwhelmingly the local folk have nice, suburban dogs, but go to the local animal pounds and they are all full of pitbulls only.

To adopt a more friendly dog, people have to go to the privately-run groups that import strays from the South, Puerto Rico, etc..

Getting rid of hubbie is not really an option...but...

The three most loyal dogs are the top three, from my experience.
And very capable of protecting their master.

Shelties rock. Our Sheltie recently passed reaching the age of 18 1/2. ye. Did agility training and small amount of competition. I think that is why she lived so long. She could still jump up on the couch for a snooze/ hang out up to 17 1/2 years young. Very smart alert family friendly dog. I wondered how a 20 lb. animal can generate 2 lbs of fur shedding.....

Agreed. We have had nothing but rescue dogs for years. Currently have a lab/rott mix that is one of the best dogs I’ve ever had.

Most of the shelters now bring dogs in from the southern US states. Some even bring them in from Mexico and the Caribbean. This has led to cases of rabies in canines again and other diseases that had been eradicated 30+ years ago in US canines. It is similar to the measles outbreak happening now. Almost all shelters are for profit operations. They make a profit by selling dogs and cats. In most places in the US there is not a stray dog problem. This is because most people spay or neuter their pets. This is not true of cats. Therefore, most northern shelters have to bring in dogs from states like AL, MS, MO, AR, etc. Many poor people in these states still do not spay or neuter their pets. The other source for dogs in shelters are the pets that are impulse buys at Pet stores. People buy a dog on a whim without much research or planning. Two weeks later(or six months) they do not want the pet anymore. It is too much work, etc. They can not return it to the pet store. So, off to the shelter it goes. If they had bought it from a breeder like me, we would take the dog back. If it is a short period of time, we would give them their money back. Petco will not.

Yes, I never cared for the pet stores selling dogs and cats. Far better a responsible breeder or rescue.

You see a lot of rescue networks now where people hold a few animals at their personal residences waiting for adoption. They also heavily screen applicants which I’m all in favor of.

My last dog passed away about 3 years ago and I haven’t adopted another yet because I realize I’m not in a position to do so right now though I would love to.

A concerning trend is mixing bull into a number of breeds now whether intentionally or accidentally.

He’s a Malanois isn’t he?
I had a female. Want to talk about loyal, loyal, loyal, intelligent and protective? WOW! BEST dog I had in NYC. I could walk anywhere, anytime. People would cross the street when they saw her. Don’t know why, she was just minding her own business. Must have been that black nose.

She did rescue a woman from being raped in a van. Started barking at the van which attracted a lot of attention from the passer bys. The cops soon showed up and took care of the dude. Only then would she budge from her spot. Fantastic rescue dog she was.

We've got two rescue dogs with strong strains of German Shepherd, rescued in Kentucky. Best thing about these dogs is that they don't ever run off. Had a full-breed Shepherd and it was the same thing—my daughter forgot to let her back in one night and there she was on the back step in the morning, patiently waiting. Loved that dog. Too many people get them who aren't prepared to give them the care and exercise they need.
