That phrase was simply about Spock sacrificing himself so that the ship might survive as he exposed himself to radiation. While it can be twisted to socialism and marxist origin, in the proper context it was simply a few words of comfort to a distraught Kirk as he had saved the ship and was dying. The parting final words of Spock dying as one who allowed many others to not perish in a disaster.

While that is exactly the impression they intended to make in the filming of that scene, I have little doubt that they were also inserting a little bit of under-the-radar socialist theory into their entertainment. The Russian Communists were also very big about promoting the struggles and sacrifices of their heroes.

I seem to recall that someone wrote an article saying that the writers did indeed intend that line as a subtle variation on "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need."

I recall he was in an episode of The Virginian, which also had DeForrest Kelley as a co-star. Kelley played an alcoholic Union Army doctor (go figure), and Nimoy played a bandit on the run who held a secret over the doctor.

"The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or one."

Would you believe Nazi Germany?

Gemeinnutz geht vor Eigennutz – "The common good before the private good"; Rudolf Jung popularized it in his book Der Nationale Sozialismus, 1922, 2nd edition. This became Hitler's basic stance on the subordination of the economy to the national interest. (6)

Yeah, I thought it sounded a bit like socialism.

Leonard Nimoy also played a Martian zombie in the serial”Zombies from the Stratosphere”. He was a turncoat zombie who decided he didn’t want to kill humans!! I think the serial is on YouTube. Anyway, you can see he had his Vulcan eyebrows!!!!

Live long and prosper!!!

Oh, yes—his one-man show where he played Theo van Gogh was excellent..very talented man!!

I hope he is OK.

I always enjoyed his character of Spock.

By the way, he wrote and performed this song himself for the episode Plato's Stepchildren.

Maiden Wine

Take care, young ladies, and value your wine.
Be watchful of young men in their velvet prime.
Deeply they'll swallow from your finest kegs,
Then swiftly be gone, leaving bitter dregs.
Ahh-ah-ah-ah, bitter dregs.

With smiling words and tender touch,
Man offers little and asks for so much.
He loves in the breathless excitement of night,
Then leaves with your treasure in cold morning light.
Ahh-ah-ah-ah, in cold morning light

Indeed, I’ve seen that episode of “The Virginian.” Also remember Nimoy in a “Wagon Train” as a gypsy brother. Played a lot of Indians, too, including a good “Gunsmoke” episode where he played a wily Indian who gets clever revenge on the people who killed his trapper friend. Yep, Nimoy spent a good dozen years in lots of tv-roles well before “Trek” started.

Logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

So he's got Obamacare and the Death panels already made up its mind?

Not necessarily. The credo could be voluntary.

Nimoy was born on March 26, 1931 in Boston, Massachusetts in the West End, to Yiddish-speaking Orthodox Jewish immigrants from Iziaslav, Soviet Union (now Ukraine). His father, Max Nimoy, owned a barbershop in the Mattapan section of the city. His mother, Dora Nimoy (née Spinner), was a homemaker.

Nimoy began acting at the age of eight in children’s and neighborhood theater. His parents wanted him to attend college and pursue a stable career, or even learn to play the accordion—with which, his father advised, Nimoy could always make a living—but his grandfather encouraged him to become an actor. His first major role was at 17, as Ralphie in an amateur production of Clifford Odets’ Awake and Sing![9] Nimoy took drama classes at Boston College in 1953 but failed to complete his studies, and in the 1970s studied photography at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has an MA in Education from Antioch College, an honorary doctorate from Antioch University in Ohio, and an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Boston University.

Nimoy served as a sergeant in the United States Army from 1953 through 1955, alongside fellow actor Ken Berry and architect Frank Gehry.

Fascinating. :)

The thing is with ...”Logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few”...

If you make your own personal private choice to give of yourself that’s not socialism ...its when someone else or the government uses that logic to makes the choice for you..its the difference between love and rape...

The statment:

“Logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few”

....would justify a majority making slaves of a minority...
