Astronomy Picture of the Day -- An Evening Sky Conjunction
NASA ^ | February 20, 2015 | (see photo credit)

Posted on 02/20/2015 2:29:54 PM PST by SunkenCiv

Explanation: Eight years ago, an evening sky held this lovely pairing of a young crescent Moon and brilliant Venus. Seen near the western horizon, the close conjunction and its wintry reflection were captured from Bolu, Turkey, planet Earth on February 19, 2007. In the 8 Earth years since this photograph was taken Venus has orbited the Sun almost exactly 13 times, so the Sun and Venus have now returned to the same the configuration in Earth's sky. And since every 8 years the Moon also nearly repeats its phases for a given time of year, a very similar crescent Moon-Venus conjunction will again appear in planet Earth's evening skies tonight. But the February 20, 2015 version of the conjunction will also include planet Mars. Much fainter Mars will wander even closer to Venus by the evening of February 21.

Too much landscape, but otherwise a nice shot!

Cool! I will look for it, if the clouds depart.

This is a very good picture. You need the "landscape" in order to capture the reflection in the water.

Very nice, Mr. Civilizations!

Will watch tomorrow for the triple conjunction, assuming these skies are clear.

Clear as a bell here in CT. It’s truly a wondrous sight. Even my ten year old said it was cool.

It’s a bonanza out there! I have APOD as my home page, but I hadn’t read it today. My buddy called and told me about this...I just went out and stood on a snow bank in back of my house with my elbow on the roof to stabilize...just beautiful!

Then the space station went over, and boy, was it bright, North west to southeast, straight overhead, horizon to horizon in three minutes.
Then looking to the east, I think that was Jupiter, and I could see four moons at about the 6-7 o’clock position!

Woo hoo!

Been watching since Sunset. Very nice view.

Unfortunately, it will be cloudy here tomorrow for the closest approach of Mars and Venus.

Such is life.

I saw it in the front window of my car as I drove home, a good sight.
