Check out the size of this goliath grouper gathering of the coast of Florida. That is a lot of really big fish.

It’s definitely not news that the goliath grouper population in Florida has been steadily on the rise over the past decade. The multitude of groupers is the cause of great concern within the angling community, as there are no natural enemies of the patriarch of the grouper family.

Years ago, before we became culturally sensitive, these Goliath Groupers were known as Jewfish. While working on a barge in the Gulf of Mexico, a supervisor who was an avid fisherman caught one. It was so big that he had to put a diver in the water to hook it up to a crane in order to get it on deck. We estimated that it weighed around 500#.

Yum yum...at $15.00/lb, that’s some prime rib eating...one of the best fish blackened there is...it seems the uglier the sea creature, the most tasty they are...lobster for example...

1)yes you can catch them. But, you must immediately release them unharmed.

2)They are delicious

3)Places with oil wells, jetties, or other areas that have a drop off to deeper water

Like other reef predators, I assume the meat of mature Goliath Grouper is very toxic to humans.

They’re known as hamur in the Persian Gulf. Better than filet mignon.

1. Can you fish for them?
2. Are these large sized fish good to eat or are the small ones better?
3. Florida has a lot of coast line, where are these fish available to catch IF LEGAL?.... From my Very informative Captain on my first grouper fishing in 2011-question 1: NO. If a charter even gets “Fish on!” and is a Giant Grouper you can’t land it on the boat. They (the Fish Commission) have even sunk bridge piping under the water to give the grouper hiding places. (Giant Groupers, Reds Or Gags all hide in crevices that fit them.) I Don’t know about Mango Groupers. #2. Yes. The largest killer of them (to pretty much extinction) was spearfisherman. #3 The Fishing DOW won’t advertise where they are. They are making a comeback and FL is trying to figure out much to charge for explicit permits to charge for fishing for them. As is usually predicted.

Yuck! Can’t stand them, and I like almost all fish.

They are ugly but taste superb.

My favorite fish is fresh water, caught in very cold Canadian lakes the ugly Walleye.

Great tasting fish don't win beauty contests.

Did you ever eat snail, clams, oysters, conch or lobsters?

I'd describe 'em but then you'd not be able to eat your dinner.
