Dean Smith, who coached North Carolina to two men's basketball national titles, died Saturday night at the age of 83.

North Carolina announced Smith's death Sunday morning.

"Coach Dean Smith passed away peacefully the evening of February 7 at his home in Chapel Hill, and surrounded by his wife and five children," Smith's family said in a statement. "We are grateful for all the thoughts and prayers, and appreciate the continued respect for our privacy as arrangements are made available to the public. Thank you."

“Great Kansan.”

Yes! I spent 10 years at the University of Kansas as a student/employee. Roy Williams was coaching then and I became aware of the UNC/KU connection. RIP

I met this coach a couple of times in my work. He was graceful and friendly. One of the true coaches.

Dean Smith is spoken of in the same terms as legends like John Wooden and Adolph Rupp. And in a way more influential than Rupp, since Smith was instrumental in ending the age of college basketball teams that were all-white players in the southeastern USA.

Dean Smith could have easily coached till he was 70 years old and if he had hiswins record would have never been broken. The Dook coach broke his record because the Dook coach has coached longer. And in head-to-head games Dean Smith beat Mike K. like a drum. DES ever had a winning record in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
