They have thrown those bones the last two elections cycles: Palin with Bore, and Ryan (a supposed up and coming conservative) with Muffins.
BECAUSE of how bad Jeffe will be, they’ll have to double down. Rubio screwed up on immigration (and they’re both from Florida, but that’s fixable, ala BushII and Cheney), and I don’t think Walker or Huckster will cut it, or rather, I think Ryan ruined it for them.
Santorum won’t be enough. Paul is an outside shot here, but that creates its own problems.
You could make the argument that Palin ruined the ‘Cruz gambit’, but I’m not so sure. First, Cruz will be more difficult to dismiss on IQ grounds because his resume screams otherwise. 2nd, because I think he’ll be shrewd about it (not saying that Palin wasn’t/couldn’t be, but Cruz has the benefit of gaming this tactic better having seen the aftermath of it’s deployment in its most recent iteration with her), 3rd, because I think he’s doing the right things: he might be lobbing grenades at the establishment, but it’s not hurting him: even the GOPe can appreciate verve, and 4th, because they’ll calculate that ‘bringing him into the fold’ will require some quid pro quo on his part: it’ll be an attempt to apply the straight-jacket, and 5th because I think they’ll game it that even if Jeffe loses, it will make Cruz damaged goods (ala Palin) - but I think that’ll be fighting the next battle based on the wrong lessons learned from the last.
I see your point. But consider this:
1. McPain acted on his own, playing the Maverick. The GOPe was not consulted...and many were appalled. The bomb-throwing began even before the convention.
2. Offering the Veep to Ryan struck me as the last act of co-option. Less a bone thrown to the conservatives than a prize granted to the new member of the club.
At the same time, I note that both of the above interpretations infer increasing weakness in the establishment's grip on the party.
Walker/Cruz or Cruz/Walker would be fine with me.
I like Bolton. Jeb or Mitt? Never.
Mark Levin is on your unacceptable list? How come? He is very literate as a conservative and writes compellingly of the principles on which our Constitution was founded. I’d prefer him to everyone else on your list with the possible exception of Trump, who would admittedly run the risk of disaster when he got bored with having to compromise to get things done.
That “Yosemite Sam” guy from the State Dept.
true that
