You must be a Jets fan.

Just goes to show how bad NFL officiating really is.

You’d almost think someone WANTED the Patriots to win.

And full disclosure, I’m a Viking fan. I’ll never see a Super Bowl in my lifetime.

Wasn’t Bill Belichick fined the highest amount in NFL history for cheating?

Yup, he was fined a huge amount...but not for any sane definition of cheating. The high amount was justified as being because he is both coach and GM - and the brand new commissioner was placed between punishing him, or conceding they 1) hadn’t actually gotten a rule passed that banned the practice, and 2) that his office couldn’t write a memo clearly. Goodel’s office obviously thought they had.

He was fined for having a cameraman, who was in team staff uniform, and with team credentials displayed, filming from a part of the stadium that did not have walls on three sides and an overhead cover. The actual rule cited in the rule book says that such filming can’t be used during the game, but doesn’t bar it. He was not only cleared of using it during a game, but didn’t even have the opportunity to do so in the case of the Jets game as the tapes were seized in the first quarter.

People often confuse the charges against him as ‘stealing signals’, but that iisn’t illegal now and wasn’t illegal then. You can’t really ban stealing signals since that would basically be a requirement to be stupid.

Note again, that the filming was done openly - reporters who saw the tapes from previous years noted that in it are examples of coaches from the other team waving at the camera as it panned. There was no debating from Belichick as to whether he had directed the team film crew to do the filming. No obfuscation. Nothing at all to demonstrate that he thought he was doing anything outside the rules at the time.

This all comes as part of a backdrop where teams had widely done this filming (Dungy is one of the few who claims not to, and I have no reason not to believe him). The year before, there was a tit-for-tat between Belichick and Mangini on this issue as each sent away the other team’s cameramen, as well as the accusations that the Dolphins had gotten the local news media to pick up New England signals and line calls (not just inadvertantly) with shotgun mikes and parabolic dishes and turn over the tapes to the team. The NFL had ruled there was no rules violations for those teams’actions shortly before they sent out the ‘clarification memo’. Specifically, the Dolphins weren’t barred from using the tapes because they were filmed by authorized media.

Okay, some Brown's fans.

;^)

I meant no serious slight, as the statement itself is a parody of such sentiment (by virtue of the over-the-top assumption posited re 'all Americans').

N'yuk n'yuk n'yuk?

"...all of these sports pale in comparison to the speed and intensity of hockey."

Absolutely. Those breathtaking 3-hour contests that end 2-0 are indeed riveting.

Actually, now that I have a large hi-def TV (and can see the puck!) I find hockey very fun to watch. I'm just in "smack talk" mode with my Patriots about to reel in 3 of the next 4 Super Bowls.

8^O

Maybe that high-definition TV is starting to let more and more people in on the dirty little secret that hockey is the greatest game on earth.

Actually, it shouldn't be much of a secret at all:

The greatest moment in U.S. sports history ...

... was a hockey game.

:-)

Thanks. LOL.

New York sportswriter Wayne Coffey wrote a book about ten years ago called The Boys of Winter. It was written to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the "Miracle On Ice." Team USA goaltender Jim Craig wrote the foreword to the book, and I get chills every time I read this part of it:

I’ve visited quite a few places that have hosted the Olympics in the past, and you almost can’t tell that the Games were ever there. You aren’t in Lake Placid for more than a minute before you are flooded with Olympic memories, whether it’s from seeing the Olympic Arena at the top of the hill, or the oval next door where Heiden skated into immortality. Whenever I’m in town, I like to go out at night when it’s dark and quiet and the shops are closed, and stand in the middle of Main Street. I close my eyes and in an instant it takes me back to that magical Friday night of February 22, 1980, to the memory of walking down that same Main Street with Mike Eruzione and our fathers and other family members, and ABC’s Jim Lampley interviewing us as we went. Snow was falling, and everywhere you looked people were waving flags and chanting, “U-S-A, U-S-A.” We were in our primes, athletically and physically. We were surrounded by people we loved, getting loved some more by people we didn’t even know. We had just done the impossible, and we were happy to be alive and thrilled to be Americans and thrilled to think that Herb [Brooks] was right: maybe we were meant to be here. It’s a feeling you wish everybody could have at one point in their lives.

OH, THANK YOU for that!

I can still remember watching on TV and hearing (Al Michael’s, I think) shouting “DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES? Yes!”

You think the cheated their way to all of those wins?

Yo, Barry Bonds was on track to a Hall of Fame career until he cheated.
Now he can't buy his way in.

There is a Culture of Cheating that defines the New England Patriots organization going back to the Snow Plow Game.
Aided and abetted by the Tuck Rule game, the most egregious officiating call that reversed the outcome late in a playoff game.
How many games did New England win when they weren't caught cheating?

Growing up, hockey was the sport to watch. I still enjoy it, but like indoor (”box”) lacrosse really fun and exciting to watch. Boards, hard checking and lots of shooting and scoring (scores of 17-15 are common).

Scoring can also come in groups for some reason. I’m watching the linked game. 5 minutes ago it was 3-1. Now it is 3-4.

There’s not any reasonable debate that the call was in accordance with the rules. People just whine because they wanted the rule that defined the end of the attempt of the pass to be different. The Patriots got the other side of the rule earlier in the same season - causing them to lose against the Jets.

The Snow Plow thing was inappropriate, even if it wasn’t illegal.

The current pressure thing? Just massive hysterical idiocy.

You're welcome!

The funny thing about that book was that Jim Craig also said he didn't think the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" hockey gold medal was the greatest event in U.S. sports history. Not only that, but he didn't think it was the greatest accomplishment of the 1980 Winter Olympics.

He pointed out that Eric Heiden's phenomenal performance -- in which he won gold medals at all five speed-skating distances and set four Olympic records in the process -- was a bigger accomplishment and would never be matched.

Back on October 23, I forget which year, the New England Patriots were playing against a team I can't remember.

Anyway, it was one of those brilliant autumn days, a perfect day for football.

I'm thinking the team that I can't remember should have won that game because the New England Patriots scored the winning touchdown on a play that should have been whistled dead because a) one of the Patriot players stamped hard on the foot of the player he was lined up with and b) when Tom Brady lobbed that pass, the receiver, whose name I can't remember, shouted "Your mother is an (expletive)" into the ear of the defending player, whose name I also can't remember, and neatly caught the ball and raced into the end zone for the winning touchdown, leaving the defending player in tears, thinking about the slur just made against his mother.

I'm telling you, those New England Patriots will stop at nothing to win a game.
