States with Weak Gun Laws and Higher Gun Ownership Lead Nation in Gun Deaths

Washington, DC — Newly available data for 2013 reveals that states with weak gun violence prevention laws and higher rates of gun ownership have the highest overall gun death rates in the nation, according to a Violence Policy Center (VPC) analysis of data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.

Meanwhile, states with the lowest overall gun death rates have lower rates of gun ownership and some of the strongest gun violence prevention laws in the nation. However, even in these states the human toll of gun violence is far above the gun death rate in other industrialized nations.

The VPC analysis refers to overall gun death rates in 2013, the most recent year for which data is available. A table of the states with the five highest gun death rates and the five lowest gun death rates is below. For a list of gun death rates in all 50 states, see http://www.vpc.org/fadeathchart15.htm.

The five states with the highest per capita gun death rates in 2013 were Alaska, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Wyoming. Each of these states has extremely lax gun violence prevention laws as well as a higher rate of gun ownership. The state with the lowest gun death rate in the nation was Hawaii, followed by Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. Each of these states has strong gun violence prevention laws and a lower rate of gun ownership.

“Reducing exposure to firearms and having stronger gun laws saves lives,” says VPC Legislative Director Kristen Rand. “Each year, the data consistently show that states with strong gun violence prevention laws and low rates of gun ownership have the lowest gun death rates in the nation. The highest gun death rates are in states with weak gun violence prevention laws and

States with “strong” gun violence prevention laws were defined as those that add significant state regulation that is absent from federal law, such as restricting access to particularly hazardous and deadly types of firearms (for example, assault weapons), setting minimum safety standards for firearms and/or requiring a permit to purchase a firearm, and restricting the open and concealed carrying of firearms in public.

Well, well, VPC. Looks like you have this exactly ass backwards. And what the hell is a "rate of gun ownership?" Have you gone through every cabinet, cupboard, and gun safe in every state? I don't know what an "assault weapon" is, but I'm hell of a lot safer with my AR than without it. Further, how would you know if my Sig is under my jacket?

Pound sand, idiots.

Better yet, let’s compare the murder rates of the cities like NYC, DC, Chicago, and LA all of which have tons of gun control laws.

Notice that they are reporting “gun death rate” and not the homicide rate.

Chicago crime rate drops as concealed carry applications surge (Aug 2014)

Since Illinois started granting concealed carry permits this year, the number of robberies that have led to arrests in Chicago has declined 20 percent from last year, according to police department statistics. Reports of burglary and motor vehicle theft are down 20 percent and 26 percent, respectively. In the first quarter, the city’s homicide rate was at a 56-year low.

“It isn’t any coincidence crime rates started to go down when concealed carry was permitted. Just the idea that the criminals don’t know who’s armed and who isn’t has a deterrence effect,” said Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association. “The police department hasn’t changed a single tactic — they haven’t announced a shift in policy or of course — and yet you have these incredible numbers.”

Translation: more serious bad guys are getting shot by their intended victims. It is called SERIOUS crime control by making sure the thugs assume room temperature so they will never be a threat again.

News Flash!

States with the most Hospitals have the most Hospital Deaths!

We can stop most Hospital Deaths if we outlaw Hospitals!

/S

The large majority of “Gun Deaths” are suicides, and most of them are old white guys.

“Gun Deaths” and “Gun Violence” are loaded propaganda terms.

This is a totally bogus study. Places with high levels of guns and concealed carry have much lower crime rates.

Any correlation to the percentage of Amish to gun deaths?

Also...cause and effect. Perhaps states with looser gun laws have them due to millions of Amish going around raping and killing whites?

Gun Ownership and Homicide Rates

US as a whole, extremely high gun ownership, highish homicide rate. Now break that down to Republicans and Democrats.

I’d expect to find significantly higher ownership and lower homicide rate for Republicans, the opposite for Democrats.

Here's why they talk about "gun deaths" rather than "gun murders": Pew Research: Suicides by gun accounted for about six of every 10 firearm deaths in 2010

If you separate black crime from the rest of US crime statistics, the US is as peaceful as Sweden.

Not at all.

If there are a lot of justified shootings, they are counted in this study as “gun deaths”. Woman being raped who shoots her attacker? That is a “gun death” according to this “study”.....the word study in quotation marks.

Utter BS and nonsense.

Anything the antis ay is a complete lie. Every time. Bank on that.
