Charles Durning military records are a bit murky. He was listed as being wounded by shrapnel on June 17, 1944 in Normandy while serving with the 29th. Inf. Div. He was not a survivor of the Malmedy Massacre as he did not serve with the 285th. Field Artillery Battalion. His decoration are numerous though.

My younger brother’s son-in-law saw combat in Iraq. My brother said to him, that our father fought in combat during WWII (Okinawa, 45 days, Purple Heart for serious injury), and came back to build America.

The young soldier of today confided with my brother, that they are not that strong today.

I met the Iraq war vet, but don’t know him well. I do get the feeling that today, discussions of PTSD are so prevalent and routine, that virtually anybody can claim victimhood, if they desire.

In fact in normal civilian life, our society is inclined to buy into virtually any victimhood scenario.

I myself am a victim of early restriction to black and white only television. Later I came to realize I was deprived, mistreated, etc. in that regard.

I would be careful equating PTSD with victimhood.

One difference today is that people getting PTSD would have been killed in WWII.

Apparently Raymond Burr told some whoppers about his personal life and history. The nature of his service is in some doubt, according to Wiki.
