IBM denies the rumor about the layoffs of more than 100,000 IBM employees. The company says that only several thousand IBM employees will be affected by the layoffs. In an email statement from IBM to Reuters, IBM officially denied the rumor concerning as many as 112,000 employees. According to the Jan. 26 Reuters report, IBM is in the process of layoffs, as disclosed in its latest earnings report last week, but it will affect several thousand employees only.
The layoffs of as many as 112,000 of the companys employees would affect 26 percent of its global workforce. Robert Cringely, a Forbes writer who is detailing IBMs layoffs, writes that the plan was to give the people notice before January 28th so they would be off the books by the end of February one month.
In his Jan. 22 article Next Week's Bloodbath At IBM Won't Fix The Real Problem, Cringely describes that Project Chrome, the code name for IBMs biggest reorganization, has been in the works for some time but culminated after IBMs 11th consecutive quarter of declining revenue.
Dismal earnings reports, which resulted in the layoffs of several thousand IBM employees in 2013, are not good for employees or consumers. For shareholders, it means it is time to take action. As one former IBM employee said in 2013, IBM, like most businesses, does not work for the benefit of its employees but for the benefits of its shareholders. And shareholders want to make a profit; not a small profit, but a profit that can support a shareholder's lifestyle.

THOSE DAYS ARE GONE.
translation: They had prepared 100,000 layoffs until they received a call from the White Hut and got their minds right.
But...but...the economy is BOOMING! Ask any liberal, who now thinks that the unemployment rate and stock market are tell-tale signs of a strong economy!
They’ll still layoff as many, but they will find a new way to package it. I was thinking the same thing that you posted.
WTF...? Everything is fine...Obama said so!
The domino notes division is spared again..
Okay, I guess they’ll NEVER fix TSM, then.
That’s okay everyone. The Republicans are working on it with the Chamber of Cronies....
Gonna help out with importing 250k STEM workers. /s
How many months until these former workers drop out of the work force so that unemployment rate can go down?
several thousand - today.
several thousand - tomorrow
and so on.
IBM used to be called big blue. Its not so much a big computer manufacturer as it used to be when I worked in data centers with mainframes.
Servers are todays mainframes, and they are having a resurgence with the cloud computing transition.
Only thing is that companies like Cisco are growing their server business because their UCS servers are from the ground up built for internet with hooks into virtual storage, routing, and blade servers. Cisco is growing its server business at 30% per year, just passing Oracles server business and not that far behind Dell.
I am not surprised, Ibm lost its mojo when it sold of its PC business to Lenovo.
Since then its more of a services company and a consulting company than a hardware play.
Gone are the days where you can spend your entire career at any company. I have been laid off three times in the past 10 years.
Yep. many companies have now adopted a “no rehire” policy.

It still has a very advanced RESEARCH division that developed such super computers as DEEP BLUE that defeated the world’s chess champion Gary Kasparov, and WATSON, a computer that defeated the best Jeopardy champions.
Their artificial intelligence labs are second to none.
Attrition plus a few thousand layoffs and they will be fine.
Yep. They surrendered to Microsoft when they abandoned OS/2 customers and developers.
Then they abandoned their printer and hardware customers.
Then they abandoned their PC and mid-size customers.
IBM's top management thought they could grow charging $500+ per hour for their "Global Services" division.
Well, they couldn't. Now their customers have abandoned them.
I was one of their first-layer betrayed customers. I say "Fug IBM."
yep, I remember in the 80’s when the IBM CE was dispatched for a hardware service call. It was someone who spoke English and wore a dark blue business suite. Most times a three piece.
Today I get someone on site wearing shorts and a t-shirt who is of a different culture. Non American.
My how times have changed.
