Help with uniform identification

Posted on 01/26/2015 5:34:12 PM PST by budda1954

Hi all. My father past away recently, and while cleaning out his house, we found some old army uniforms. I suspect they were one of my mothers brothers uniforms. They have a number ink stamped inside F-2817, that I would guess would be an identification tag of some sort. Also, there are no other id's on the uniforms except for a 6th Armored Division patch. Any help would be appreciated. Does anyone know of an internet site where I can type in a name of a relative to finds dates of service, etc.?

Thanks.

Funny thing, as much as they drilled into us, "always remember your service number!", I still remember my RA number 40+ years later :-)

If I may add an anecdote, re: remembering your service number:

Our Drill Sergeant (one SSG Turnbull, which, of course became Turdbull, behind his back, mind you) required each of us, at meal time, to jump flatfooted onto the small open vestibule-type entrance of the messhall, scream at the top of one's lungs: "Drill Sergeant Turnbull, Private Doe, RA********, reporting for my meal!"

If one stumbled or could not immediately remember one's SN, one was subject to dire consequences, usually a thousand pushups, before one could rejoin the mess hall line.

God help you, if you announced US or NG, whether you stumbled over it or not, you were subjected to not only thousands of pushups, but had to go throught the gorrilla bars and the sawdust pit at least twice, before admittance to the mess hall.

The US indicated a draftee and the NG indicated National Guard.

The RA was for Regular Army, indicative of a voluntary enlistee.

It took me about three times to get the routine down perfectly, but of course, the DS, being the buttheads that DS's are (I later became one) simply found another query to trip me up on.

Oh, for the good ol' days!

Oh, for the good ol' days!

The good old days indeed...

I remember one time with Drill Sergeant Gritman (yes, that was his real name), at Fort Lewis; we were doing PT and I was in the front leaning rest position when he noticed that I had bought at the PX some OD elastic bands to blouse my boots instead of tucking them inside the boots; I've never done so many push-ups in my life, LOL!

Glad the "good 'ol days are long gone.."

My first thoughts, as later suggested by other posters, it’s a laundry mark.

Last letter initial, then last for of SN.

I recall my RA number to this day, as well as some slogans to go with it, such as he US’s calling us RA = Regular A$$holes.

My favorite in basic was the ER’s & NG’s making fun of us RA’s that we’d all be sent to Vietnam while they were home making out with our women. We got the last laugh, the ER & NG units were activated for RVN duty.

Yes that is the patch. I wonder why there are no other identifying insignia on the uniforms?

Thanks to all for the information. It gives me a “next step” as to where to go to identify who had these uniforms.

God bless you all.

Mark

Yeah I have to say same as above.....his first initial of his last name and last 4 of his SSAN was normal laundry mark an ID. Cant say or provide much more without a photo or time date era. The last 4 laundry mark would have been post serial number when only ones SSAN was used as a service number.

Stay Safe !!
