Portable Electric Generator Recommendations Needed
Here ^ | 1/25/15 | Rebelbase

Posted on 01/25/2015 9:11:33 AM PST by Rebelbase

The old 5000 watt Kohler has bit the dust.

Looking to buy a new portable electric generator. There are dozens on the market and would like FReeper recommendations for one in the 5000-7500 watt range.

Also considering going with a propane fired model.

Any suggestions? I see a lot of Generac units at a decent price, comments about those?

There’s a place just north west of Broadway on 259 (VA, about 15 miles from the Hardy county W.VA. line) that sells alcohol free gasoline, if you’re relatively close to that. Otherwise, look on the net and there are some sites that show those locations.

Generac...I believe made in Waukesha, Wisconsin...best around...Honda powers some generators but I don’t know if they make the generators themselves...

It was the decompressor, so they finally decided to replace the entire motor.

I showed my better half the Green Acres episode where Oliver had a number on every electrical device and their generator couldn’t take more than ‘7’.

I bought a Ridgid 5700 at Home Depot. I too did the "check reviews 'til your head spins" thing. Most reviews of this one are very positive. As mentioned above, I considered the harmonic distortion numbers when comparing models. I posted a so-so review as NGU60. Good luck.

Now days, avoid anything with a Briggs & Stratton engine.

Briggs used to be rock solid until they started getting all their machine work done in China.
The cylinder work is garbage.
They were trying to tell some customers that it was OK for a twin cylinder lawnmower motor to burn half a quart to a quart of oil every 2 hours!

Husqvarna went to Kawasaki and Kohler engines on their lawn tractors because of Briggs problems.

Go Honda or Kawasaki engines on a generator.

Honda makes a good 5,000 kw generator.

"Has already worked great during this years first outtage. Cannot believe anybody else has not thought of that. Heating oil guy has lived his whole life up there and never thought or saw this setup."

Congratulations.

Many people here in 'Hurricane Alley' have generator systems that are 'hard-wired' into the house and are fueled by the natural gas that they use for heat. These systems come on automatically when there is a power failure. People in more rural areas that don't have natural gas have 250 pound propane tanks.

My advice is that whatever you buy, maintain the gas.

I have been using premium REAL gasoline in all of my small engines after paying for multiple carburetor rebuilds. Its expensive and only available at certain stations (www.pure-gas.org) but my fuel troubles are gone.

Pure gas with a little added Sta-bil stores just fine. That adulterated corn juice is pure garbage.

I was thinking of a setup like that, and debating whether to get a duel-fuel setup and buy a propane tank, so if the natural gas also runs out, I’d have propane.

Then I decided if something has taken out both the grid AND the natural gas, I probably don’t really need electricity at that point.

My ideal house setup though would include both the generator with natural gas and propane, AND a solar panel system. Could last for a year or more with a 500-gallon propane tank.

Thanks for the plug on Ridgid.

I’d love to have a honda but price wise it’s not happening.

The Ridgid 6800 watt with the Yamaha engine, low THD and electric start is looking like a front runner.

There’s no fuel cut off but after checking out the unit at Home Depot it’s shouldn’t be an issue to install one under the gas tank.

Thank-you to everyone who replied, your comments are appreciated.

There’s plenty of ethanol-free gas pumps in my area.

Agreed. I live in Michigan. I converted my genny to tri-fuel because we lose power all the time because of tornadoes and ice storms. So I got my kit from Century Fuel Products at their kit site www.cfpkits.com. Now I can run on propane, natural gas or gasoline.
