Skating Star Tai Babilonia Opens Up About Her Struggle With Alcoholism

1988 is when she crashed: “It was nonstop work. The money was rolling in. You have a lot of people relying on you. But I get it, I signed up for the job so follow through – I just couldn’t, I couldn’t follow through. And, I tried to take my life.”

Babilonia hit rock bottom.

“Once I was getting my stomach pumped, a little light went on saying, ‘You have a voice and you’re allowed to use it. So, girl, use it,’ ” she said.

It’s an emotional subject for Babilonia, and some things are still too difficult to discuss.

“You just never know where life is going to take you. But just being sober, I’m now six years sober, and that’s probably the biggest thing, the biggest accomplishment: that I pulled it together.”

The anonymous aspect of AA is to give those there the freedom to speak without fear of being outed by others. Their anonymity is protected by the others.

Outing yourself is a personal choice and not a violation of the program. For some, it may be a necessary part of their journey.

I have friends who shared their story with me, an outsider to the program, because they wanted to.

The ‘’anonymous’’ means, among other things that A.A. is a program of attraction, not promotion.

Yes, but without revealing the successes of AA how do they attract?

Furthermore, when high-profile people reveal their anonymity and should they pick up a drink again it's in the natural cynicism of people to say, "See that ''recovery'' stuff is a crock''.

The same could be said about any AA member who goes out.

I don't know if there was more than one page to the article since the website locked up my internet browser then caused it to crash.

From what I was able to read, it appears there was more to the story then just her struggles - the organization she works with to help homeless and addicted young women..........

Roy Tarpley lost his battle yesterday with it.

Could have been one of the all-time great basketball players.

Actually “outing yourself” is somewhat of a neccessity when “making amends” to those you have harmed by your alcoholism.

Besides most people know when someone is an alcoholic.

She quit drinking.

That’s the kind of quitter I admire.

It’s been attracting just fine since 1934. And yes, the same can be said about any A.A who goes back out. However when you’re a celebrity announcing your anonymity to the world you’re putting yourself in the spot light.

Actually, I don't see AA attracting. People have to reveal it exists for alcoholics to know. Talking about it revealing it to others is how it attracts. Seeing successful AAers is how people stay and keep coming. The people who work the program "attract" newcomers.

There are still people out there who have no idea what AA is, how it works and the fact that it's NOT a religion. Plenty of drunks would benefit from some positive exposure.

It’s been working just fine for almost eighty years, trust me. It’s been working just fine for me the last twenty-four. Never a shortage of people who find the rooms.

I’m far from 20 plus years but the difference in the physical condition I was in when I got there compared to the condition I was in when I left was astounding. When my wife met me on the runway she cried and so did I, even our pilots couldn’t believe the difference. Had I waited another month I’m sure I would have been dead.
