One of the most gifted and ultimately tragic talents in NBA history has died. Former Dallas Mavericks big man Roy Tarpley, a terrific scorer and rebounder whose career was derailed by drug and alcohol abuse, died in a Dallas hospital Friday at 50 years old.

Last I heard, he wsa playing in Russia. Didn’t know he’d come back to Dallas.

Having had my share of family and friends pass away, it’s true that some ways of dying are far worse than others, and some are pleasant by comparison. Not that dying itself is pleasant, but it awaits us all eventually. Maybe it’s best to just say that some ways to go are terrible.
I was booking someone into Lew Sterret jail 20 or so years ago and there was this really tall dude being booked in. Turned out to be Mr. Tarpley. Didn’t look real happy.
May he rest in peace.

He could have been one of the greatest NBA players ever, and the Mavs would have won several NBA titles if he had kept himself clean, he was that good.
RIP.
Had a Tarpley jersey back in the day. Darn shame what happened to him.
