As of Jan. 1, 2012, an estimated 13.3 million lawful permanent residents lived in the United States, and 8.8 million of them were eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship but had not done so. In California, 2.48 million out of 3.4 million green-card holders were eligible to apply but chose not to. And, of course, not all non-citizens residing in this country are “lawful.” An estimated 11 million people live here without permission, though President Obama recently took action to defer the deportation of as many as half of them. .

If non-citizens are allowed to vote, what is the purpose of citizenship?

The question is poorly posed. We The People who are legitimate citizens are the true sovereigns of the dying Republic. Allowing non-sovereigns to vote is an oxymoron that the progressives serving the oligarchs want to have ignored, so the leftists principles of ‘fairness’ and ‘tolerance’ rule over the law of sovereignty.

Takoma Park, Maryland ( THE Freak state) (for many years) allows illegal alien invaders to vote in their local elections. Of course, the LIB/DIM morons also declared themselves a "nuclear fee zone". The loser state also has been a "sanctuary state" for many years. If you "live" there, escape while you can. It is hopeless there. Oh, by the way, LIBs/DIMs are mentally ill. Have a Merry Christmas!

As far as I know, a resident of a town/city/state, but non-citizen of the US, can be given the right to vote in town/city/state matters. Voter qualification is the prerogative of the controlling jurisdiction.

The difficulty in obtaining this arises from existing voters being reluctant to dilute their already trivial amount of say-so.

Exactly. The structure of our government starts with “We the people” and the votes of each representative are OUR votes. The decision of our elected officials are OUR decisions (boy I hate to own those, but that is the theory). If “we the people of the United States” because “we the people of the world” our sovereign nation no longer exists.

The legitimacy of the representatives rests on the legitimacy of the vote.

If we lay aside the state, local, general municipal bullshit that sucks up most of our lives on the government scale, and give ourselves the time to think of the 'big picture', then all we can honestly say to ourselves is... Let's annex Cuba. Let's do it right now, while our dear leader is on a way cool vacation. Let's see what these new voters say about this, or anything else.

Such sophistry....

You are a resident of a town....not a citizen of that town. We are US citizens, we are residents of a state, county, town.

From the article: But the answer is...to expand the circle of citizenship.

They would also argue for example (per 1917) they have the right to play any upscale private golf course they choose without being a guest.

Sadly, they miss most of the benefits of being a human being and are for the most part probably left with just sex and food, albeit of reduced quality.

In national elections, NO.

In state and local elections, leave it up to local option.

Federalism and all that.

"Their policy is simple. The citizenry is troublesome, so import a new citizenry. We are being replaced. The remaining problem is, it is taking too long as they have to wait for the replacements to wait out the years of red tape to get their green cards, then more years waiting to get their citizenship. Its taking too long. So, just change the laws so they can start counting their votes now. They already control important pieces of both parties. They often, in fact usually, have two horse in every race. They control an enormous number of judgeships allowing them to circumvent the citizens almost at will. But they are losing patience. They want it all and they want it all now."

Well and succinctly put. Another couple of years of Obama's remaking of America with the complicity of the GOP leadership and the Rat vote advantage will be permanent.

The way it SHOULD be.... Only property owners should be able to vote. The way it is now, renters, illegals, low information voters, welfareites and deadbeats all vote for all the goodies they want, and only the property owners get to pay the bill.

Most people think this is about voting and making the Dem party the sole party in the US. That is only the intermediate step—it isn’t the end goal. The end goal is looting the piggybank of the wealthiest nation in the history of the world. That is the end goal. It is nothing more than greed and if you follow the path of the Dem party since the early 60s, you can see it focusing on entitlements and other goodies like monthly paychecks for just breathing. It is all about looting the nation.

I would amend that to property owners, veterans and active-duty/reserve military.

Why would the bother registering? They can collect all the benefits without any of the responsibilities. Plus, they vote already.

So these geniuses want to give the U.S. vote to everyone in the world. What do they think all these people will vote for??? Generous government benefits for themselves--at the expense of the hard working American people???

I tell you--we need an I.Q. test for citizenship, voting, and writing newspaper editorials--one that scores "being a registered Democrat" under "MORON".
