) — The old saying, "Home for the holidays" carried special meaning Thursday, when another 195 Fort Carson soldiers made it back to Colorado Springs from Afghanistan just in time for a turkey dinner with their loved ones.
Tears, hugs and gratitude were as abundant as the pumpkin pie to come.
"It gives a new meaning to the word 'Thanksgiving,'" said Lt. Brian Solomonson, kissing his daughter, Sophia, who was born on Thanksgiving Day last year.
The homecoming marked the return of nearly all of the 2,500 deployed soldiers of the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. Another 250 soldiers with the brigade are scheduled to arrive at the post at 8:45 p.m. Friday.
"It's been long and hard and rough, but it's been worth it," said Brittney Blinkinsop, as she held on tight to her just-home husband, Jeffrey.
"We have a lot to be thankful for," he said, scooping up the couple's three children in his arms.
The brigade left for southern Afghanistan in March, to work with Afghan National Security Forces in Kandahar, Zabul, Uruzgan and Spin Boldak. Some soldiers helped destroy ammunition.
As is customary, returning soldiers walked through a wall of smoke shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday as a packed house of relatives and friends let out maximum-decibel cheers. The post's Special Events Center was festively decorated with Christmas trees and snowflakes and a giant American flag.
