It contains one of the biggest and brightest stars in our galaxy, weighing at least 90 times the mass of the sun. The Eta Carinae star system, however, also has a dark side - it could bring the end of life on Earth. However, the good news is that experts say this is 'extremely' unlikely - but cannot rule it out.

The spin axis of Eta Carinae is not pointed at us, fortunately. So it will look big and bright when it pops (visible in daytime) but not fatal.

I remember reading that Betelgeuse will undergo a supernova (type I or II?) and become a neutron star or a black hole. In other words, it will go BOOM eventually.

IF it gets to the point where it fuses what’s left into iron. That’s the tipping point for a star to go nova. It would be a show I’d like to be around for..but no way I could be.
