Teenage My Little Pony fan APOLOGIZES to internet trolls; threw himself under train (Truncated)
The Daily Mail ^ | 12/17/2014 | Jay Narain

A teenager who was bullied by online trolls posted a heartbreaking video on YouTube before killing himself, an inquest heard.

Adam Smith, 19, who had learning difficulties, was bombarded with spiteful remarks and accused of plagiarism over a short story he put on a website.

In response to the vicious bullying, he posted a video on YouTube entitled ‘I’m sorry’ where he apologised for any misunderstanding.

But he was lambasted again by cruel users, who mocked him saying his speech problems were so bad it made them laugh.

Days later he was seen crying as he walked to a railway line near his home, where he was hit by a two-carriage train.

I don’t necessarily interpret “special needs” kids with malcontents.

Have you actually observed these “special needs” students in the classroom or on the phys ed field? I don’t want to believe you could otherwise be so cold.

As a life long music teacher, my wife has seen more than her share of boys who were not into sports or war games, but loved to play the piano or the flute.

And she can tell you stories of several of them who drifted into homosexuality due to the intense pressure from disgusting relatives/peers who slammed them again and again with "You are acting like a little faggot."

After all, if so many people they trusted told them that being interested in classical music and not in football made you a fag, why would they not believe it?

I'll say this....the Internet is cruel place because of the anonymity associated with it but it's not the problem; the problem is people no longer have the decency to behave properly. It should have been blatantly obvious that a 19 year old male whose world is wrapped up in my little pony probably has some problems. It's the social equivalency of kicking a retarded person in the street.

Normally we do not mock the mentally disturbed

Well, that segment of society is rapidly increasing.

They typically find refuge in left wing politics and can, often times, be very dangerous simply by their voting practices and influence on society.

Our godson has mental health problems, OCD and bi-polar. He basically lives in his bedroom and his only interactions outside his family and his psychiatrist are with people on the internet. From what I have gathered those come in 3 types, kind people who offer him advice and encouragement, nasties who say the most outrageously ugly things while hiding behind the anonymity of their keyboards, and the “crazies” people who are as ill or worse off than he is.

I know that our godson needs more help than he is getting, but a mother in denial and finances that will not stretch to cover more than he gets at present pretty much guarantee that he won’t get it.

I can appreciate that. I was not speaking in extremes. I'm talking about "peers". Our own friends, brothers and fathers. The bully has boundary issues as well. We all know from experience that the only way to get those boundaries back in line is to follow the bully to his threshold and cross it. My point is still the same. If your child cannot properly deal with it, they should not be using the internet as a social outlet. Those boundaries do not exist at all.

On the second and unrelated point, I also get tired of normal peer pressures and social development being classified as bullying (not that you were). I would also guess that these boys you are speaking of have other environmental issues... no dad, parents that are not engaged, or any one of a million reasons they do not have the skills necessary to integrate or cope with the problem. I would also guess that when you "guide" them, you aren't telling them to "keep dong the same thing, it's everyone elses fault", are you? You are helping them in some way to be stronger, more confident... not come up with excuses or reasons to keep things from changing. That is what we expect from the actual adults and your role is an important one. But still, nothing teaches a young man social norms more effectively than his own peers.

For instance (and this is true).. I can tell my 12 year-old son that he needs to put on deodorant every day and explain why. But he won't... that is, not until a girl at school called him stinky. He doesn't skip a single day now. In fact, he even puts it on a second time before football/basketball practice. It's just the way we are wired

You misinterpret “special snowflake” for “special needs”.

NOT THE SAME.

“Special snowflake” is the term mockingly used whenever socety /parents/educators tells an individual that they are “special”, regardless of the contributions they offer.

"But still, nothing teaches a young man social norms more effectively than his own peers."

Spot on...I can only guide/coach. Some act on it, others don't...it's not an infallible method.

In my experience, "being there" and having a line of communication open with the young man gives them an outlet or a rescue line they might not otherwise have.

Well first of all, I’m speaking about norms here, not extremes. I’m also speaking from what I know, and I’m not a girl so I’m not going to pretend to understand the process from the perspective of a teenage girl. I would suspect the process is the same, with different general subject matter. Lastly, if your peers stood around and let a mentally retarded student suffer at the hands of an actual bully, something went seriously wrong there. I don’t know a single person that would have stood by and watched that happen. this isn’t theory, this unfolded several times during my school years and there was a reason it didn’t happen more often... consequences. And I was just using that as an example in context with the thread... it could be the abnormally small kid getting beat up by someone 3 times his size, the same rules apply. In fact, my dad would have shamed me if he knew I allowed something like that to happen, it is part of my responsibility as a real man, not a passive, indifferent lemming. Some people may not like traditional roles, but I’m proud of mine. I like my convictions and I’m pretty stubborn about them. the only place my “manliness” does not serve me well is in the presence of my wife. I know when to to and what parts to suppress, it’s part of self-preservation. Nothing out of the ordinary, we all do it

You’re still an Eagle Scout Old Sarge and always will be...unless you reject it. Regardless of what the BSA may have done recently, it is an accomplishment worthy of admiration and respect.

Mild hazing/teasing is not the same as bullying, I agree. It can be an effective method of changing behavior.

I debated commenting just because no one will ever change an opinion on this stuff but what the hell.

There are absolutely some bat crap crazy-pussified-thanks to liberalism in society people of many ages attached to this show.

There are some people with actual through no fault of their own mental issues of many ages attached to this show.

There are also some of us that never bought the pony tshirt, went to pony conventions, name our pets/children after characters or dress up as ponies for holidays. And we will be glad to put our collective man cards up against any Billy Badass that has an issue with it.

Now for a non fanboi reason why non preteen girls ALSO find the show interesting? There’s this cool word a lot of us older types used to know that used to be a part of our lives. “Innocence”. MLP is perhaps one of the last toons in production that has that. Perhaps one of the last shows period.

Loony Tunes were kids cartoons too. As was TopCat, Felix, Hanna Barberra and a bunch of others that I’d bet more than a few Billy Badasses watch to this day.

Not that said, what of the supposedly stable 20 yo dude that make the show their lives purpose? Personally I’d rather spend time on ensuring that the younger guys liberalism hasn’t already destroyed don’t GET destroyed and leave the species-questioning types as fodder for the ferals in the coming collapse.

Now if you’ll all excuse me, I havent watched “The Little Mermaid”, my favorite animated flick ever, in a long while now, so I think I’ll spend the rest of the day with my excessively credentialed Man card enjoying it.

Unmentioned in the story is if this kid had a father. I am assuming he did not.

When I was 15, my friend started laughing at an old, ragged man my dad had stopped to ask for directions.

Then, I laughed, too.

Faster than you might ever imagine, my dad’s right hand flew over the back of the car seat and smacked me upside the head, without even missing a beat in his conversation with the old man.

I never laughed at anyone’s physical issues, again.

The world needs more of that.

Why don’t you read the article? There’s a pix, to boot!

In fact, I was going to quip that if I were that boy, I would’ve said “my dad can beat up your dad” any time some punk tried to pick on me. Which I’m sure that big man could.

Tell that to the guy upthread. Doesn’t have a problem with his young girls laughing about a “weird guy” in pink.
