Flu shot or not?
The dark recesses of my brain | December 15, 2014 | 1raider1

Posted on 12/15/2014 5:02:16 AM PST by 1raider1

I just heard a conversion, on the radio, between the show's host and a doctor concerning flu shots. The host asked, "What do you tell people who won't get a flu shot because they say it makes them sick?" The doctor replied, "Well, after you get the shot, you can't get the flu, but you might FEEL like you have the flu because of the reaction to the shot by your immune system". I don't know, but if I take something that makes me feel like I have the flu, I think I'd be safe in saying what Monica Lewinski's boyfriend's wife said, "What difference does it make".

Never had a flu shot, can’t remember the last time I had the flu. I’m more than 1/2 century old.

Being allergic to the flu shot and having some horrible flu’s over the years, I really wished I could have taken the shots. It does not cover all the strains of flu for a given year but it is another line of defence that can help.

If you are over 50, the risks associated with getting the flu (e.g., being exposed to MRSA in a hospital, pneumonia, etc) are far greater than the risks from the vaccination itself.

I last had the flu about 40 years ago.

I've never had the shot.

Only problem is the dominant strain of flu this year isn’t covered in the current vaccine. Also, the vaccine doesn’t guarantee you won’t get the flu that it does cover, thuogh the claim is that it should be less severe should you contract it. So, yes, of course you can get the flu after you’ve had the shot. This year it happens to be a particularly virulent strain of the flu that isn’t covered; and it is killing healthy people in short periods of time (about 40 hours for an otherwise healthy 17 year old I heard about on the news last night).

My last one was in 1978. I use Echinacea and Zinc instead. It works better.

I’ve never had the flu, and never had a flu shot. I’m 62.

I travel extensively and my doctor advised both the flu shot and Pneumovax 23 this year. He said he had a young patient whom contracted flu on a business trip and died in a hospital in Madrid. Vaccination is cheap and effective!

Your chances of contracting the flu this year are the same shot or not.

Even in a year where the drug pushers get the strain right, your chances or contracting the flu are still close to the same, shot or not.

My one and only flu shot was in 72, while in the USAF.
I dodged it in 73 and got out in 74.

I get the flu about once every 10 years.

BUT, I lived alone for most of 40 years.

I think it’s a farce, as they get the strain wrong 75% of the time.

Pros and cons - I opted to make this year a no-shot one. My personal history is that when I get the shot, I spend more time sick than when I don’t get the shot. So far, this season is holding true - had a cold-like bout for 3 days about 7 weeks ago and have been hale and hearty the rest of the time. I’m 62 and stay fit so I’m willing to “risk” it.

I got the shot the first year it was widely available (1970?) and was sick for almost a week. Never took another and haven’t gotten the flu. I’m 71.

I know. Every time I’ve had the flu shot, I got sicker than a dog. Most years I ignore the hype and move on with life. The sickest I’ve been flu-wise was when I have had the flu vaccine. My wife was forced to get it this year by her employer (that or wear a mask until May). She didn’t get sick until about a week later - same for a few of her co-workers. She missed 3 days of work because of it.

I got the flu last year and was given Tamiflu - I felt fine in 3 days, overall it was pretty minor. I missed one day of work.

I’d bet you actually heard a CONVERSATION on the radio....

But if you really heard a CONVERSION; well as long as it was sincere, and one of them gave their heart to Jesus, I’m all for that, too.

One is not REALLY ready to LIVE, until they’ve made peace with God and are ready to die.

Doesn't that depend on circumstances? I don't work. If I go to a movie or a store, it's early in the day when the air has cleared and it's not crowded. I've figured out a really good diet. I have plenty of liquids. I don't go into overcrowded places with bad ventilation.

I figure I've cut the risk of getting the flu (which is never 0) down to less than the risk from a flu shot.

What exactly is the “flu”? Is that when you’re barfing? Or pneumonia-like symptoms?
