FULL TITLE: ‘This is why we check our shoes’: The horrifying pictures of spiders in footwear, children’s trampolines and car seats that are turning U.S. travellers off Australia

Emerging from shoes, lying undetected in toilets, waiting patiently in cars and on walls, native wildlife has earned Australia the tag of a country brimming with deadly creatures.

In many cases, this reputation is well-earned, with countless cases of bites, stings, and close encounters with the nation's creepiest of crawlies.

Images of the poisonous and many-legged creatures have started to pack a frightful punch overseas, with many US citizens expressing their fear of travelling to Australia because of what they might find hidden in their shoes.

I live literally in the forest and I keep my work shoes in my truck and wear flip flops TO my truck. I can see what’s in my flip flops :)

I was on a tennis court once that wasn’t used often. What did I notice near the undersides the lip of the plastic trash can next to the courts?? TWO black widow spiders, hour glass and all!

You are never more than 3 feet from a spider, the old saying goes.

You have nothing to fear from spiders with Peruvian special shoes.

Dang, I’m sorry. I didn’t look far enough first.

It was the perfect choice.

Just one reasons I left Australia - nasty critters were everywhere. Never ever poke a small brown round ball in your house. Never.

LOl tx :D

Spiders truly amazing and frightening creatures.

I’m scared to death of them as I was bitten by a brown recluse many years ago, however, I was very fortunate to only have a mild reaction to the venom. The wound never really got bigger than a nickel, and it took months and months to heal.

Thing is though these little buggers are all around everywhere, and the black widow is not uncommon either.

I will admit it here and now, the seeing one of those giant furry spiders one twitching leg away from crawling up my arm or down the leg of my pants would frighten the hell out of me, and cause me to completely embarrass myself. If I stayed in such a city for months or maybe years, eventually, I would develop a sight tolerance for them. For some of them anyway. If they touch me, they’re going to be shaken off and promptly smashed with the biggest brick around if I can do it.

Not mine. They like my mocs. And shower curtain.

S’OK, though, just bought a bigass can of RAID last night.
