"...I have so much love for Jesus in my heart at Christmas....Our traditions are simple..."

You and me both.

I have a 3.5 yr-old. I want Christmas to be special, and NOT about consumerism, consumption, and acquiring toys.

I never gave it critical thought until I had a kid; before I was just grumpy about the shallowness of our society.

Now that I have a kid, I must have a solution.

For dinner, make it a tradition to make a real special cake with a sparkler in it. My children loved it when they were young and still do as young adults. We play lively party music in the background - usually a familiar country western song and we sing and dance. Nothing like a sparkler on Jesus’ birthday cake as one way of many, to remember the reason for the season!

After exchanging presents when we share what we appreciate with one another in the spirit of who Jesus is and how He wants us to be, my four year old was having a hard time figuring out what to say. Finally he blurted out, “I like the way you wash my socks for me, Mom. My feet don’t stink like Joey’s.” : ) Christmas is a collection of fun memories.

I hope you find a way to celebrate Christmas with your family that you all enjoy. It’s the biggest birthday party on earth. One thing I noticed is that parents who make a real big deal about Santa and presents get their children over excited about things they want for Christmas. It (material) becomes the whole anxious center of Christmas for the children. It’s a huge build up and then a big let down. It’s just a bunch of things in the end.
