The US manned space program was gutted by Obama so I suppose any trip to Mars will either on a Russian spacecraft or a by private US company.

According to democrat Sheila Jackass Lee, humans have already been there!
Sheila Jackson Lee
Member of the U.S. House of Representatives
from Texass 18th district
On a visit to the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 2005, Jackson Lee made embarrassing news by asking if the Mars Pathfinder had taken an image of the flag planted there in 1969 by Neil Armstrong.[2]
Prior to the 110th Congress, Jackson Lee served on the House Science Committee and on the Subcommittee that oversees space policy and NASA.
Note: wiki has since removed much of this content. However, it can be easily found elsewhere.

NASA has announced that a test launch of their Orion space capsule will take place on Thursday, in the first step of a mission that will take people to Mars by mid-2030.
That was a one day throw away campaign promise by George H.W. Bush ... we weren't supposed to ACT on it!
Next I'll find out about W's hydrogen fuel cell cars taking over.

While I like to think of new frontiers, I would want them to be on this earth, and alas a chicken...
I would not have gotten on that Mayflower, send me a postcard please. PS. glad they did.
I would not have gotten on one of those wagon trains Westward. Send me a postcard, PS glad they did though.
I would never get on a space ship to anywhere. Send me a postcard, ps, I won't be alive to receive that postcard..

No one is going to Mars in that cramped little Apollo-era like space capsule. A flight to the Moon in Orion? — That is possible. But Mars — no way.

It’s good to see that the political correctness of the Space Shuttle years are behind us.

The launch was scrubbed uptil tommorow at about the same time - if the wind cooperates, and if they can fix the flawed valves.

Actually it was far more than a campaign promise ... There were lots of hearings and planning within NASA. It died because the Dems would not fund it.
See here for President’s Commission on Moon, Mars and Beyond http://govinfo.library.unt.edu/moontomars/index.htm for pdf.

When NASA gets to Mars, they should be sure to visit the Space X Visitor's Center to pick up some free maps and discount coupons.

At the time, his poll numbers were falling, and it seemed like a thin ploy to do something JFK-esque. However, 2030 was a little far off for it to really sound meaningful.
