‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’ Is The Worst Christmas Song Ever
The Federalist ^ | December 3, 2014 | Leslie Loftis

The worst Christmas song ever isn’t actually a Christmas song. It’s just a song that uses Christmas in the hook and was popular when it was released. So Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas” gets played every year starting at the end of November. Every year, I think that the awfulness comes in part from the refreshed shock of dreadful lyrics I’ve not heard in 11 months. Instead, my loathing of the song grows through the season and year by year. So as it starts playing on repeat—and the 30th anniversary edition regales us with two versions this season—a complaint against this offense against music and charity.

will say the worst Christmas song ever is John Lennon's "Imagine". One can question if "Imagine" is a Christmas song but for some reason radio stations include that song in their Christmas line up. I wonder which program director took a song that embraces Communism and Atheism and decided that was appropriate to play alongside Silent Night.

False. Any song that has Phil Collins on the drums has to be given the benefit of the doubt.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono on “So This is Christmas” has got to be the worst Christmas song ever. War is over? Lame!

That's certainly one of the terrible ones.

You might be thinking of “ Happy Xmas War is over “.

Horrid bit of smug caterwauling.

Jingle Bell Rock makes me want to punch someone.

Santa Baby is just awkward.

Baby It’s Cold Outside is just goofy.

Walking in a Winter Wonderland, and that song about the kid wanting shoes also mages me gag.

Honestly I cant listen to anything that was made after 1900. It just gets more campy and secular. And the newer the song, the more annoying jingly bells in the background, and the more people need to yell out the notes to make up for the emptiness of the lyrics.

They should’ve done “Yoko Got Run Over by a Reindeer.”

Simon and Garfunkel “Silent Night/7:00 News” is pretty stiff competition for sanctimonious sixties crap.

Father Christmas, give me some money. Don't mess around with your silly toys. We'll beatcha up if you don't hand it over.

You know what? I think after reading your post I've decided I hate them all. All of them.

I wonder if it's because of the radio stations that go wall to wall Christmas music starting about two weeks before Thanksgiving. I think they may have killed every Christmas carol that's ever been recorded.

I don't consider myself a cynical or negative person...I enjoy Christmas...hmm.

Bono’s song is bad because it does not tell the impoverished Third World what it really needs to hear: Slash taxes, deregulate your economies and tell your people to get to work instead of waiting for handouts from the West.

Notice that the conquering North Vietnamese Communists (aided by Chinese and Russian imperialist Communists) didn’t want war to be over either (at least until they WON).

That’s not a Christmas song. It’s an anti-Christmas song. My husband has never heard more than about 3 seconds of it, because every time it comes on, I flip the station and go into a rant about how horrible it is. Then I boycott the station until I get over it.

As someone who grew up in Baton Rouge, I hated all songs with snow in them. They are not Christmas songs, like “We Three Kings”, they are Winter songs. I finally decided that singing snow songs was the only way the poor Yankees could make it through another 6 months (or whatever) of winter cold and snow, so I would laugh and be thankful that I was down South where it is warm.

I challenged our local station that goes Christmas after T-giving on the Lennon version of Imagine a couple of years back...haven’t heard it since...however...

I heard some newer version of it yesterday...gonna light ‘em up over that today.

A song that starts out with “imagine no religion”...sure, that’s a Christmas song. /s

Hmmm. I never knew that song was that young.

And I think since it wasn’t some pop music novelty song, and has a meaningful origin rooted in the non-secular Christmas, it actually stands out from every other song made during that time.

That's how I feel about Christmas music in general.
