Bill Cosby: Will we ever feel the same about him?
chicagotribune ^ | DEC 2 2014 | Clarence Page

When asked about recent allegations against Bill Cosby, Chris Rock fell into what for him is an unusual position. He was at a loss for words.

"I don't know what to say," he told New York magazine. "What do you say? I hope it's not true. That's all you can say. I really do. I grew up on Cosby. I love Cosby, and I just hope it's not true."

A lot of us longtime Cosby fans have been at a loss for words ever since long-simmering rumors boiled over in recent weeks that Cosby allegedly drugged and sexually assaulted women over many years. Then Rock mused: "It's a weird year for comedy. We lost Robin, we lost Joan and we kind of lost Cosby."

Yes, we have. Unlike the losses of Robin Williams and Joan Rivers, Cosby is still alive, but that's more than we can say for his comedy career or his stature as a civic role model.

The bad news for "Cos" keeps on coming.

“Yes there were instances but it was not rampant.”

I think the 1950 and early 60’s count as rampant. There were still segregate lunch counters then.

Too many people equate a celebrity’s screen persona with his personal life. It doesn’t always work that way.

Google Paul Reubens.

Johnny Carson was another world class jerk, although he did manage to maintain some long term friendships.

“So what about the victims?”

I always try to use a ‘wait-and-see’ attitude until all of the facts are known.

Of course, if there are ‘victims’ then he should spend the rest of his short life in misery in prison.....and flat broke after paying them all valuables that he owns, money, stocks, bonds, house, furniture, etc.

Even if true, there is always the ‘statute-of-limitations’.

“Heard on TV this morning another woman has sued him.”

I heard something too, on the radio, and I’m not sure I heard it right. What I thought I heard was that a woman is going to sue him for attacking her back in the 1970s. That’s 40 years ago and I would think a suit like that would be barred by the passage of so much time.

I had several relatives who worked for Carson plus a friend of mine was his secretary for a while. They all loved him.

Too many Americans worship at the Church of celebrities and sports figures. They believe the public personas and private personas are one and the same. Sadly, their children also worship at the altar.

True, that! He apparently fooled the women AND his ‘fans’. ;-)

The statute of limitations will not save his legacy.

I lived in Selma Alabama in 1966-67. It seemed pretty rampant to me back then...

Heck, we were a WHITE family, but my Dad was military and thus associated with the federal government. In Selma in 1966, we literally could not get served in a restaurant. No one would ever serve us. We pretty much ended up living on the base and driving THRU Selma to go elsewhere.

Racism was still very strong in the 50s & 60s.

Call me a skeptic, but I come from a very traditional way of thinking. If he did these things, he is vile. If they put themselves into drug infested parties like I did once, they had a choice. Continue or leave. Sorry Brother. More than one way to avoid bad outcomes. Mainly, stay out of them!

Oh, and screw Cosby if this is true. Probably is, the slimy bastard!

“The statute of limitations will not save his legacy.”

I am over 70 and do not know how much time I have left. Ask me if I care about my ‘legacy’. It is the furthest thought from my mind. ;-)

I had a friend who truly believed, “Eff everyone except for six. Save them for pallbearers then after my funeral, Eff them, too!” ;-)

I hear Tim Conway, just to name one, is a wonderful man.

When my husband ran a comedy club, he invited Tim Conway to come to visit. Conway called our home and I got so excited the phone slipped out of my hand (actually, jumped) and landed across the room. He ended up calling my husband’s office instead...

I saw him on a talk show once, and he did seem very rude. I haven’t liked him since then.
