I’d say teacup or toy poodles. They don’t shed and are super easy to potty train and train to come and do tricks.
If I were you, I’d get a couple of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. They are small — but not too small — and have great dispositions.
I have used this temperament test for years and it has never failed to help me select a great pup from a litter: 1) Pick up the pup and lay it on its back with the head in your palm. The pup should struggle. If it does not, put it down, as it will be too passive. If it struggles and can be calmed with kind works and strokes, it is the one. Otherwise put it down it will be too aggressive.
Anyone but Hillary.
Golden Doodle mini
Granted, 25 to 30 lbs is larger than 10 pounds but they have the temperament of a Golden, hypo allergenic coat and are very intelligent.
Smart, funny, & long lived. Great company.
My recommendation would be to study the AKC Breeds by description and pick a dog whose temperament, energy level and activity needs fits your needs and desires best.
A Boston Terrier might be a good place to begin looking. Good low maintenance companion dog.
Look at one of these(they shed a lot though):

I apologize in advance, but I can only recommend the noble, loyal and highly intelligent German Shepherd, because there is simply no other dog.
They also usually weigh in just over 10 lbs, so should be a perfect fit!
Keep in mind that the smaller the dog, the lesser amount of time you can leave it alone. We have friends who RV with their two Yorkies and if they’re away from the RV for more than two hours, they’ll come back to puddles on the floor.
I think we have one here.
Well, I just got nipped by the neighbor’s chihuahua, last night, so I would say, cross that off of your list!
Hey you can’t replace me..
Had a minature poodle (silver) for 18 years, got him at 6 months, never made a mistake in the house, never chewed anything, no attitude, just a loving sweet companion that would not leave my side. He was special!
oh my gosh! I’m sorry about the loss of your dog; so sad. BUT......I am very glad to hear you’re ready for another one. I strongly recommend the humane society and animal control as you will find exactly what you’re looking for!!!
Please consider doing that. The dog will come spayed or neutered, wormed, all shots and ready to go.
.....me again. No offense to anyone here but, don’t buy a full blooded dog. When there’s human intervention in breeding you see all kinds of issues with health and/or behavior.
Please also consider a larger dog as most apartments/condos ban them so the shelters are full of larger dogs.
Lastly, I have pit bulls. They are sweet, smart and protective. And, of course, the shelters are full of them.
Dachshunds only way to go!
We have two boys..a Pomeranian/Maltese mix named Nemo and a Shih Tzu named Maxie..Shih Tzu’s and Poms are great dogs..I know your used to bigger dogs since you had two Golden’s, but you might want to give a smaller breed a try :-) Golden’s are such great dogs Im so sorry for your loss :(
