The head of the troubled Phoenix veterans hospital was fired Monday as the Veterans Affairs Department continued its crackdown on wrongdoing in the wake of a nationwide scandal over long wait times for veterans seeking medical care and falsified records covering up the delays.
Sharon Helman, director of the Phoenix VA Health Care System, was ousted nearly seven months after she and two high-ranking officials were placed on administrative leave amid an investigation into allegations that 40 veterans died while awaiting treatment at the hospital. Helman had led the giant Phoenix facility, which treats more than 80,000 veterans a year, since February 2012.

Finally!
Just fired? When are the charges coming for defrauding the government? The main motive in all this was to cook the books and trigger performance award criteria.
Don’t celebrate too much...as a former civil servant, I know how these kabuki dances actually work. Helman will slither into the sunset with a nice, fat pension.
At the time of her dismissal, Ms. Helman was making $178,000 a year as Director of the VA Medical Center in Phoenix. With 24 years of federal service, she is entitled to a monthly pension of $6800, or just under $80,000 a year. And it’s a fair bet she filed retirement papers shortly after being placed on administrative leave, and her request was granted.
Lest we forget, Lois Lerner’s “retirement” was approved despite the fact that she could face indictment for crimes related to the IRS scandal. And a senior EPA official who is now in prison on fraud charges is collecting his pension while behind bars.
