Uber Executive Suggests Digging Up Dirt On Journalists
Buzzfeed ^ | 11/17/14 | Ben Smith

A senior executive at Uber suggested that the company should consider hiring a team of opposition researchers to dig up dirt on its critics in the media — and specifically to spread details of the personal life of a female journalist who has criticized the company. ~snip~

Michael was particularly focused on one journalist, Sarah Lacy, the editor of the Silicon Valley website PandoDaily, a sometimes combative voice inside the industry. Lacy recently accused Uber of “sexism and misogyny.” She wrote that she was deleting her Uber app after BuzzFeed News reported that Uber appeared to be working with a French escort service. “I don’t know how many more signals we need that the company simply doesn’t respect us or prioritize our safety,” she wrote.

I have mixed emotions about this based on the facts surrounding this story. But, in many ways I think I am finding myself supportive of the idea of those with enough money turning the tables on the partisan players masquerading as journalists.

I see the problem with being able to intimidate journalists in order to influence their ability to dig for truth. yet, we all know that many of them do the bidding of beltway insiders fro fear of being dropped from the Sally Quinn party list. So I have no respect for them when they claim the shields of constitutionality.

I skimmed the article at the link, but still can’t figure out what an Uber is.

Considering what journalists do, I would call it a case of basic turnabout.

It's no longer a matter of fighting for the truth, it's a matter of fighting for one corporation's market share over another's.

Is Uber a groundbreaking new form of transportation or just a tax and licensing dodge?

Is Airbnb a groundbreaking new way for people to swap places to stay or a tax and licensing dodge?

Is Amazon successful because it has reinvented retail or because consumers can get away with not paying sales tax?

Is the fight about Net Neutrality one between free enterprise and universal access, or is it just a fight between Netflix and Comcast?

Americans have always been big on tax and licensing dodges. See the 'Stamp Tax'.

I can’t figure out Uber, either. But the idea of someone with a lot of money going after holier than thou journalists, many of whom thrive on ruining people, intrigues me.

It’s a dodge .. but that’s not a bad thing.. in my city the “preferred” taxi company gets all the very best spots at every public venue freezing out the independants... it’s limiting the politicians on what their graft is worth...

Uber is a social media based way of connecting people who need a ride, with people who are willing to share a ride (for money of course).

I can’t argue with your logic, but see my post at 13 for why I’m extremely suspicious of this outfit.

Not all users, it matches people who want to give rides with people who need rides.

Uber is an app on your phone... you use it if/when you need a ride... i used it in San Francisco... my nephew was celebrating his birthday at the Presidio, but before that, we all met at his apartment late morning and enjoyed mimosas and bloody marys... we did not want to drive after drinking, so we all used Uber to get to the Presidio... the first ride is free...

Oh, I’ve heard of that company - just didn’t know what it was called. I think they just moved here to the Portland Oregon area. Thanks for the info.

On one side I am suspicious of the association of Plouffy.

This seems like a ride sharing/car pooling app. And the taxis with the expensive medallions are whining (well maybe taxis should be the only 4-wheel vehicles on the road outside of goobermint? Maybe they need to exercise some pull with the government). And their problem is????

A little free business advice to the whiners. Improve your product, or risk going the way of the buggy whip.

I agree. They are some sort of Occupy capitalism venture. How the hell can something owned (essentially) by no one be worth $18 BILLION?

I have learned one truth.
Never short or buy puts on any company that is a regime affiliate.
They can defy all fundamental rules of financial analysis.
