Norm:

I had no way of knowing that you were a refugee from Catholicism. I feel sure that you know that I was not being hostile to you personally.

I do understand why many have been gravely disappointed by the Church and its leaders and particularly in the United States and more particularly in upstate New York in such dioceses as Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse for three examples.

Your age is also relevant. Those of us who were conscious of Catholicism in the golden pre-Vatican II age of Pius XII were left with his memory to hold onto. His great associates such as Alberto Cardinal Ottaviani, Carlo Cardinal Confaloneri and Amleto Cardinal Cicognani all survived to be there for the funerals of John XXIII and Paul VI.

At that point in 1978, Albino Cardinal Luciani was elected as Pope John Paul I, an example of what is called "the fine Roman hand" also described as the "iron fist in the velvet glove." Taking the names of his two predecessors was a way of confusing their history. Luciani was a long time disciple of Cardinal Ottaviani and was Patriarch of Venice when elected pope. There is a strong appearance that he was murdered by household staff (poisoned?). No autopsy was allowed, a tradition going back to the early 18th century.

In the second conclave of 1978, Karol Cardinal Wojtylwa was elected as John Paul II, continuing the confusion over John and Paul. Neither John Paul I nor John Paul II had any intention of continuing the regrettable and relentless liberalism of John XXIII or Paul VI.

Upon his election, St. John Paul II immediately fired the entire papal household staff from the kitchen employees to the guy who stoked the furnace on the superficial excuse that he wanted only those who spoke Polish working in the household. JP II spoke 11 languages fluently including Italian. Far more likely, he wanted employees he knew he could trust, having spent his entire adult life fencing with nazis and then communists. By comparison, Luciani was naive and vulnerable.

Most importantly for the US Catholic Church, the election of John Paul II meant the end of the positively evil Archbishop Jean Jadot of Belgium as Apostolic Delegate to the United States. The era of Jadot was 1973-1980. It was a regrettable era which was marked by the flourishing of the likes of Los Angeles Archbishop and Cardinal to be Roger Mahoney, Joseph Cardinal Bernardin of Cincinnati and then Chicago, Bishop Howard Hubbard of Albany, Archbishop Rembert Weakland and a lot of other disgraceful miscreants. Apparently Jadot saw to the appointment of 103 bishops and 15 archbishops in the US in his time, Google Archbishop Jadot's Boys for extensive explanation and the gushy 2009 Boston Globe obituary for Jadot for much of the rest. You may also find the sickeningly sweet National "Catholic" Reporter (or Fishwrapper) tears and flapdoodle obituary.

Don't let Satan's trash like Jadot drive you out of YOUR Church.

DO read the late Malachi Martin (SJ) novels The Final Conclave and Windswept House for a very good and thinly veiled account of what we have lived through until St. John Paul II's health finally failed. Also Martin's non-fiction The Keys of This Blood about the Polish Catholicism that gave us St. John Paul II.

You are in upstate New York. That area was particularly burned over territory with a LOT of very bad bishops. Let's talk. It would also be helpful to know your approximate age.

God bless you and yours!
