Unless it is made from rapeseed oil, commercial “mayonnaise” is merely soybean oil emulsified with a little bit of egg, vinegar, and lemon juice.

Soybean oil is unfit for human consumption, period.

Even the products they market and LABEL as “Olive Oil” is a scam... The first ingredient is water, second is soybean oil, and third is olive oil.

The best mayonnaise is homemade... it is not difficult to do.

I like Best Foods mayonnaise as much as Hellman's.

Same product, same manufacturer. Hellman's on the East Coast, Best Foods on the West Coast.

Hellman’s does not own the word ‘mayonnaise’ so what’s their beef?

A number of common grocery products are covered by what's called a "standard-of-identity", as defined by the FDA.

To be called mayonnaise, a product must include certain specific ingredients in certain specific proportions. For example, Miracle Whip is a "salad dressing" rather than a "mayonnaise" because it is less than 50% vegetable oil by weight.

Hellman's may not own the term mayonnaise, but they are defending its standard-of-identity. Hellman's most definitely is mayonnaise, Just Mayo is not.

As a consumer, you have an interest in standards-of-identity -- they require a product to be what it says it is.

As I’ve grown older, I’ve noticed a distinct difference between various products I remember when young and now. You might chalk it up to old age and damaged taste buds, and I probably wouldn’t disagree with you.

For many years, the makers of Maxwell House coffee would reduce the quality of the coffee beans used from year-to-year as a means of controlling cost and combatting inflation.

Each year they would conduct taste tests of the new formula compared to the previous year's formula. From year-to-year, not even the most expert tasters could tell the difference.

Eventually, somebody had the bright idea of testing the new year's formula against the formula from a decade past. Everybody could tell the difference...the quality decline over time was obvious to even the most amateur taster.

Hellman’s is for east of the Rocky Mountains and Best Foods is for west of the Rocky Mountains.

I have seen both in North Dakota. Maybe someone lost track of which side of the Rockies they were on...
