Windows 10 Already Winning Users' Hearts, Says Dell

With Windows 10, Microsoft is trying to address many of the annoyances in Windows 8, so the new operating system will not only bring back traditional and very popular features, but will also try to better tackle user needs with the help of feedback platforms. With this in mind, it appears that Microsoft is heading in the right direction, Dell says, explaining that company customers have already expressed their interest in the new operating system.

In a statement for ComputerWorld, Neil Hand, vice president of tablets at Dell, explained that features implemented in Windows 10 that would allow users to launch applications on multiple devices running this operating system could gain the attention of quite a lot of potential buyers, especially in the enterprise business.

“The ability to create applications that are super-scalable from phone to tablet to PC is the big step in a lot of ways,” Hand said.

Windows 8, just a transition OS

Dell, which is actually one of the key Microsoft partners, also launched Windows 8 products, even though adoption of this particular operating system wasn't really meeting expectations.

But the company now looks forward to Windows 10, explaining that Windows 8 was most likely just an operating system that served as a transition platform to a new platform that comes with everything users would want, no matter the device.

Obviously, adoption figures are those who are the most important, Hand explains, so the very first months on the market for Windows 10 are critical for the upcoming product.

According to sources, Windows 10 is expected to launch in spring 2015 with versions not only for desktops, but also for tablets and smartphones

Previews already available for download

Microsoft adopted a completely new strategy for Windows 10, inviting users to participate in the development process and make feature suggestions that would help improve the final product.

This is already happening thanks to approximately 1 million users who registered for the Windows Insider Program, as Microsoft says that the feedback collecting efforts are going really well right now.

Needless to say, many more users downloaded and installed Windows 10 Technical Preview on their PCs, mostly because they wanted to see what was new in the operating system, but many are also submitting feedback and suggestions to improve the operating system, so Microsoft shoot two birds with one stone.

More improvements are expected in the upcoming updates for Windows 10 Technical Preview, including windows animations and a more advanced notification center.

I just know that 8 has been disastrous. I know of small businesses trying to work with it and others said screw it and went apple.

Then they did little searching. Install Classic Shell, add a Quick Launch bar, and it is much like W/7. As explained in Windows 8 pro review (upgrade XP to Windows 8 with Classic Shell) ">this FR thread. : In from what i see using the Window 10 preview, as explained in this thread , shows little change from Windows 7. And i usually run with about 100 tbs open in 2 browsers, and about 12 docs, etc.

There is not much of any reason to change to W/10, except for service life. As long as the OS is 64bit for increased ram capability. Even XP is fine for most businesses, except it is no longer supported.

Meanwhile, Linux has a long way to go to be mainstream. Never really had an Mac to try.

Windows 8 is an unmitigated disaster on every level.

...

No it isn’t.

Classic shell causes big problems from time to time.

I've been using it since it first came out and have never had a problem. I would still be using XP if it wasn't for Classic Shell. Win 8.1 works great on my pc and the desktop looks just like it used to when I had XP.

“Then they did little searching. “

Well, if it sucks right out of the box.... :) I’ve not used apple a lot either but if a lot of SMB is going that way or mixing it up with linux, which is what I would do, that’s easily 10 years Microsoft will have to wait to try to get those customers back, if they can.

Like FReepers who, from time to time, make outlandish claims without offering any details or examples?
I've used CS on a Dell PC with WIN 7 for two years. Zip, zero, nada problems.

Agreed...The UI and Metro start menu is pretty terrible but the underlying OS is pretty solid.

If Win 10 fixes the former and makes the OS usable and intuitive to home users as well as business users, Microsoft will find success again.

I think they also need to step away from that Microsoft account business or at least make it more clearly optional, but otherwise I agree that the underlying OS is stable. Despite the complaining about Microsoft, they are market leaders for various reasons and hopefully they will straighten the mess out.

You mean iOS 8.0.2

I have problems with the keyboard freezing and cut/paste not working. Safari seems slower as well. Not a happy camper.

I’ve actually seen several YouTube videos demonstrating Windows 10 Technical Preview. The highly Desktop user interface centric orientation of Windows 10 is why I expect Windows 10 to be a huge hit among corporate and government users.

There is really no reasons to upgrade from Window 7 to 10. For Windows 8.1, just use Classic Shell . And add the Quick Launch if you want, as explained in above threads. One thing that could be much improved, and could be a major selling point, would be much improved speech to text capability. Dragon (hate the name) basically has a monopoly for Windows, this improvements are small and at about a $100.00 cost.

MS should work with hardware manufacturers to optionally enable the PC to boot from voice recognition, and to create custom commands, like as one can make keyboard shortcuts to do things. Choose function>web page: http://www.freerepublic.com. Command, "Go to FR." Click on post reply, etc,.

Plus Alarm: "notify me at 4:14pm"via text. And do voice training from users own documents (not just use them for spelling). The list goes on once you begin.

What is there that Classic Shell will not enable?

Also, since like W/8, WTP does not provide a Quick Launch tool bar, and which I like, I created one. Just right click on the Task Bar and go to Toolbars>New Toolbar and paste C:\Users\TypeYourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch (except that TypeYourUserName must be replaced with be you user name).

I also create a shortcut in the Send to folder to the Send to folder and place it within it, and then I can send shortcuts to any program or folder I want, like the Quick Launch tool bar. The Send to folder location is C:\Users\TypeYourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo.

Your Start menu is here: C:\Users\TypeYourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs More tips in linked pages in above posts.

Yes, it is.

Windows 8 has been completely rejected by business, which is the biggest buyer of windows by far.... ITs also been roundly rejected by consumers.

The idea that you could force the ZUNE interaface onto the desktop was just beyond stupid.

Windows 8 has been such a disaster for MS that they are releasing a full version update barely 2 years after its release, and labeling that Windows 10, skipping 9 to move as far away from it as fast as possible.

There is no spin on the planet that can be offered to make windows 8 anything but a miserable failure. Its been such a failure MS upped the non support date of Windows Vista to try to prop up sales as well...

This thing is an abject, whole, and complete failure on every level from MS.

You don’t understand how businesses work if you are seriously arguing that they are going to go buy a bunch of 3rd party crap and put it on there entire enterprise just to make the OS usable by their trained employee base...

WIndows 8 is a disaster, and its been roundly rejected/ignored by the enterprise for good reason..

Here is the complete and concise reasons why Windows 8 is an absolute failure. 8.1 kludged it to a bit more useable, but still doesn’t solve the underlying problems with the entire thing.

I installed a brand-new disk in an old (c. 2006, originally WinXP) PC, loaded Ubuntu on it ... old beast has a very new lease on life. LibreOffice, RhythmBox, Firefox, and other software work very nicely for me ... and I have my beloved “bash” (from my Sun & SGI days, aeons ago) back.

I am almost ready to say with 100% certainty that Microsoft has turned the corner.

Their new CEO is a family guy that came up through the ranks. He appears to know how to get the company turned around and headed in a better direction.

Linux Mint is the service pack to fix those niggling Windows problems.

I have tried every major Linux distro, and use xbuntu (the best one i found for older HW) on a laptop, but in Mint (as well) things like being able to even find locations via right click>properties was not there, while getting permissions to make changes to required searching what code to run in a terminal (and malware has not been a real problem in 15 years with Windows, thank God), while configuring a printer took even more work, while lacking equivalents to Windows apps like AutoHotKey.

Plus many multimedia codecs are not legal in the US without a license (MS now charges extra), thus the rise of Fluendo .

I think the Linux forums abound with far more issues with varied "try this" answers (like 2 days ago, when the audio stopped working on my xbuntu after a software update) that require a time consuming learning code, in proportion to the number of Windows users. And i say this as one who wants a better OS.

Classic shell causes big problems from time to time.

Could you elaborate? I suspect it is more a HW issue.
