One of the legitimate functions of government is to keep people safe from selfish idiots.

That thought process is what gave us Obamycare.

You are free to be an idiot. It’s up to everyone to protect themselves from the idiots.

Distracted driving IS dangerous. That, however, is not why cops ticket you for it. They do it for the revenue and to harass.

If they REALLY were doing it because of safety, they’d quit using their phones and computer while THEY are driving.

Texting while driving is unacceptable, but this is starting to sound Big Brotherish.

Do not text and get off that cellphone call. Pay attention to driving and stop looking directly at your passenger.... (I had a someone do that to me, never been so scared when in their car)

Meanwhile the police officer needs to do the same while also learning to use turn signals and stop blasting thru stop signs.

#15 I have a guy at work that sends instant messages to me and he sits across from me about a dozen feet away. I turn around and say to him “I am right here, speak!”

Drive with someone you trust. Let the passenger handle the phone. Return the favor. Ain’t Love grand?

By that logic then you should also pull over to eat, drink, look in the glove compartment, or do anything that takes away your concentration on driving.

My point was we do many things that distract us while we drive, voice texting may be less distracting than many of the “legal” distractions such as eating, drinking, looking at a map, playing with the GPS, tuning the radio etc.

4. Your own cellphone records

....which I successfully used in my own defense against a false charge of texting-while-driving, just about a year ago :)

Note 1: I told the cop at the time of the stop what my defense, and the outcome, would be. He issued the ticket anyway. Dumbass.

Note 2: It's still legal in Michigan to use the phone while driving, and the judge told the cop that even absent my more-than-adequate defense, I could claim I was talking on the phone, and he'd have to take that into account.

So yay... and Don't Text and Drive, it's dumb.

So, no laws? Just defense and retribution? Do you really believe what you wrote? Do you really think that laws against speeding and running stop signs are like Obamacare? And you’re calling ME an idiot??

Ok... I wasnt calling you specifically an idiot.. but referring to your original post.

Now, speeding laws, etc. are necessary yes. But, texting and driving are already covered. There doesnt need to be additional laws. When the citizens obey the laws, the government has to create more laws to create more lawbreakers to enrich the treasury, among other reasons.

Enforce safe driving laws (speed laws, lane change laws, insurance, distracted driver laws, collision laws, etc.) equally, there’s no need to enact more.

At that point, "texting" will be no more distracting than having a conversation with the passenger next to you.

Not exactly. A person next to you also is aware of your surroundings and will stop talking if they sense you need to pay attention.

Before any anti-texting laws were passed, what was the law that prevented people from texting while driving? It was only a few years ago that the textures and cell phone companies were claiming that texting was like changing the station on your radio. It was only after the laws started being passed that all the cell phone companies jumped on the “don’t text and drive” bandwagon.

People and corporations do not act responsibly unless forced to do so. People are selfish sinners and they run the corporations.

After a very, very close call on I95 I’ve decided that texting, as opposed to talking on the phone, is considerably more dangerous than driving while legally intoxicated. Steps to enforce laws against it are entirely reasonable. Those who do it are greatly endangering others.

Electronic device use has made the roads quite a bit more treacherous than they were say 20 years ago.

Last week I saw a kid set up thier IPad on their dash, and was appearing to watch a movie or show or something while driving.

Driving defensively has never been more of a essential than now.
