We need to throw a Shoot in Marfa one of these years.

Marfa is a city in the high desert of the Trans-Pecos in far West Texas, located between the Davis Mountains and Big Bend National Park. It is the county seat of Presidio County, and its population as of the 2010 United States Census was 1,981. The city was founded in the early 1880s as a waterstop; the population increased during World War II, but the growth stalled and reversed somewhat during the late 20th century. Today, Marfa is a tourist destination and a major center for Minimalist art. Attractions include Building 98, the Chinati Foundation, artisan shops, historical architecture, a classic Texas town square, modern art installments, art galleries, and the Marfa lights.

Just for the lookin' up at the sky.

So I just talked to the event planner guy at Hotwells to let him know we would be there on the 15th and to ask who would be giving us a tour & letting us know what options they offer.

He said that none of the weekend people would be able to tell us about all the different options or give us a quote ~ they could only give us a tour of the range. *sigh*

So, it looks like a weekday trip to the range is on my agenda next week. I’ll keep you guys posted, in the event you want to go with me.

From talking to him, it seems there are several options of events they offer. Me not knowing exactly what we want does not help much either.

Do we want them to officiate a contest or two? Will said contests be on the pistol, rifle or skeet range? Do we just want to shoot at the different ranges together or different times? There was another option that I forgot about.

I like that they are making an effort to accommodate us on the day of the shoot, unlike all the other ranges that just say “It’s first come first serve ~ don’t like it, go somewhere else.”.

Not that my opinion cuts any onions.. but as far as I like stuff..

No contests.
We’d like the run of a 25 yard pistol range and a 50 or 100 yard rifle range. (Lanes, benches, whatever they like to call ‘em.)

Reactive targets? Bouncy balls? Yes please.
If not, we’ll shoot paper.

Can we shoot shotguns at the pistol range?

More simple more better, but I’m easy to please and even more easily amused.

Addendum:

It might take two benches or lanes per range..

We’re looking for about eight people to be active per each hot period on each range.

That’s based upon observing how many folks were sitting VS shooting at any one time.

On average.

Figuring on thirty people, that pretty much lets everyone
shoot every other hot period.. or ten minutes or so.

The range folk can’t do a special event thing on a weekend. I guess the guy didn’t hear me say that the first time I talked to him.

Even if they did, it wouldn’t be a good fit for us. Although he promised everyone would have a great time ~ we would all have to stay together during different planned sections of the event. AND - the cost would be approximately $75.00/person (which included range fee, pavilion & food).

The range has a lot of pistol and rifle shooting bays. There is also a skeet section ~ clays cost $9.00 for 25. No bouncy things or exploding targets are allowed and they change the targets for you (yes you can keep the target if you want it).

For a Saturday event, we will be like regular customers. Their range fee is $10.00 per gun. The cost to rent the pavilion is $75.00 for two hours.

To the Houston crew - do you still want to meet there this Saturday to have a look-see? And at what time?

To the Northern crew - what time do you want to meet for lunch at Carl’s BBQ?

I think that is all for now.

They sound like some overpriced wankers, as regards our “special needs”.

We’re “special needs” shooters!
