From a military standpoint, the generals have a responsibility to tell their civilian leaders when a campaign is ill advised.

I certainly agree. However...I read about a meeting Rumsfeld had with his generals, right before the 2002 Iraq invasion.

One general (I believe it was an air force general) asked what the plan would be if a guerrilla war broke out. Rumsfeld angrily told the group that the next person who brought up a guerrilla war would be fired.

So I wonder if the generals had spoke the truth from the beginning, but the politicians just weren't listening.

Sadly you’re right...It was pathetic we kowtowed to Karsai and his corrupt family and government.

They didn't. The generals didn't say shiite. I was there. And I was involved in the planning for the Battle for Marjeh, Helmand province in 2008-09.

There was however, an Army colonel that wrote a letter to SecDef. That letter can still be found online. But for their part, the generals have forgotten there is no promotion beyond 4 stars. They have a bigger responsibility towards their men, the same lives that were wasted: and their families will continue to feel the effects of that waste: because there is no consolation when a life is sacrificed for nothing.

I got so mad from dumb Americans "thanking me for defending their freedom"; not realizing they needed someone to defend them against their own stupidity.

"Afghanistan is doing what it has always done...chewing up and spitting out Empires."

What "empire" were we trying to establish?
