SAN JACINTO, Calif. – A Southern California school district will apologize to an 11-year-old atheist who says his teacher questioned him because he didn't stand during the Pledge of Allegiance.

Ivan Cobarrubias says he kept his seat during the morning pledge at Monte Vista Middle School in San Jacinto earlier this month because the words "under God" in it violate his beliefs.

Also, a banner that read "Prayer Changes Things" has been removed from the teacher's classroom.

Isn't diversity and tolerance wonderful?

In a normal world, the child would be forced to apologize to the class.

"Prayer Changes Things"

In our society, it appears that "whining" changes things.

What if it was found to be a prayer to Allah? Or Satan? Or the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. Your assumption is it is a prayer to your Christian God.

While I agree, I imagine that his pedagogy hasn’t included basic common decency. I doubt that the Public Indoctrination Center programmers ever taught him basic civics - which would include standing for the pledge (out of respect) even if you do not participate.

This country is swirling in the drain...

I’m sure this child’s ‘parents’ are very proud of him.

Next week, the school will eliminate the pledge to accommodate the atheist. And next month the school will allow anyone to use any restroom to accommodate suspected transgenders. And next year estrogen will be handed out to all boys to “calm them down” so they are more feminine. The LW Slippery Slope is out of control

Hey, cut the little jackass some slack — for perhaps the first time ever, an atheist doesn’t insult the intelligence and instead refers to atheism as beliefs, which is correct.

Is it so hard for those that don’t agree to respect those that do? He could have stood and remained silent.

Good point. After all, it was a public school.

No. You should not be made to stand for the Pledge. I can’t imagine NOT standing, but forcing someone to is the opposite of what our freedoms mean.

I also don’t agree with removing the innocuous “prayer changes things” as it is not endorsing a specific religion, but freedom of speech is the right to not stand.

Conservatives should ask themselves why they want the government schools to force their children to pledge allegience to the Federal flag.

I don’t want my child pledging allegiance to the Federal flag.

Allegiance is earned.
